Here’s how Apple’s AirPods Pro hearing assistance stacks up to professional results

  • Apple's AirPods Pro 2, when combined with iOS 18.1, can be used as OTC hearing aids, offering the same benefits as $1,500 hearing aids for just $249. The author assessed how good the AirPods are as OTC hearing aids by looking at two performance criteria: the accuracy of Apple’s software-driven hearing test and their ability to provide speech enhancement. The article compares the author’s hearing test done by Apple against their audiologist, where there was a slight overestimation of loss. HearAdvisor, an independent hearing aid testing company, lab-tested a variety of OTC and prescription models, including the AirPods. The article reports that the AirPods received a B grade and that the tuning undercuts the potential of the AirPods to deliver the best hearing enhancement.
  • HearAdvisor has given the AirPods Pro 2 a B grade, placing them in the second tier of its rankings. The tests show a substantial difference between initial and tuned results of 111% in speech in quiet and 225% in noise. Andrew Sabin, HearAdvisor scientific adviser, suggests Apple may do this because new hearing aid users often prefer less-than-prescribed gain to preserve naturalness. While Sony’s CRE-E10 receives an A grade from HearAdvisor's tests and a perfect 5/5 overall score, it sells for between $898 and $1199 and does not deliver similarly large increases in performance. The CRE-E10 is 18.4% better than the AirPods Pro 2 in speech in quiet and 73% better in speech in noise. The article suggests the AirPods Pro 2 is a great way to experiment with hearing enhancement and a good set of wireless noise-canceling earbuds for music and phone calls.

CES 2025: The new tech we're expecting to see in Las Vegas from AMD, NVIDIA, Hyundai and more

  • CES 2025 is expected to showcase AI as more pervasive in all areas of the show floor. This includes the usual slew of new processors and subsequent laptops, as well as all manner of wearables, trackers, bathroom appliances, and massage chairs.
  • Expect to see new video cards from AMD and NVIDIA, as NVIDIA is expected to debut its long-awaited RTX 5000 video cards at CES, while AMD CEO Lisa Su has confirmed we’ll see next-generation RDNA 4 GPUs early next year.
  • We should expect more AI-packed PCs than ever before, as PC makers are gearing up to take advantage of Windows 10 support ending next year. Expect endless AI hype but also a year of reckoning where PC makers must prove their proposed AI innovations' fantastical claims.
  • Soundbars have not seen much innovation from year to year. Audio enhancement features are a place where companies can really rise above the fray. We should expect to hear about expanded dialog improvement features on soundbars.
  • Flying taxis are a mainstay of CES, and the era of air taxis may have landed for real in 2025. Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation have pledged to launch eVTOL services (electric vertical take-off and landing) in 2025.
  • Sennheiser is the biggest audio company that consistently launches earbuds at CES. Samsung and Google could likely add hearing health features to their existing health platforms, given their existing technologies.
  • Delta CEO Ed Bastian will deliver a keynote along with Jensen Huang (NVIDIA's founder and CEO), and C-suite executives from companies like Panasonic, SiriusXM, Waymo, and Volvo group.
  • Hyundai Mobis will showcase its “Holographic Windshield Display”, while LG will unveil the 2025 refresh for its QNED evo line of LCD TVs.
  • CES 2025 is expected to see AI become more pervasive in all areas of the show floor beyond wearables and personal health products.
  • CES 2025 is set to feature a lot of companies making their products known to us, with appointments for briefings, demos and panels to fill up our calendars.
