Sorry Metaphor, but after playing 300 hours worth of Atlus RPGs in 2024, Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance is my favorite

  • Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance, an Atlus JRPG, features monster collecting and tactical turn-based battles without the additional complexity of Persona’s social link system.
  • Shin Megami Tensei 5’s Press Turn combat system demands a careful and tactical playstyle, making it hard to brute force through an encounter.
  • The game’s open world maps, set in the ruined future of Tokyo, feel more like videogame spaces than most contemporary JRPGs.
  • Despite being set in a destroyed re-imagining of a real place, Shin Megami Tensei 5’s tone is weirdly dream-like, verging on a slightly off surrealist horror.
  • Sound design plays a crucial role in the game, giving a sense of an enclosed space that does not reflect its open-world setting.
  • Shin Megami Tensei’s games give players an idiosyncratic sensory rush that is difficult to find in other games.
  • The game encourages players to embrace the beauty of unreal videogame spaces, rejecting any attempt to create ‘real, living’ spaces.
  • Shin Megami Tensei 5 illuminates the consistency of Atlus' RPGs in embracing unreal videogame spaces and retaining the ‘purest’ form of the studio's distinctive vision.
  • Shin Megami Tensei 5 offers a different experience for players compared to Persona, thanks to its simpler gameplay mechanics and dream-like atmosphere.
  • Overall, Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance is a weirdly beautiful game that provides a unique and unforgettable sensory experience to its players.

  • Black Myth: Wukong is an excellent example of the Soulslike genre that explores real-world mythology.
  • It is an easier Soulslike game that has bosses without the need for excessive trials.
  • Black Myth has impressive production values that bring its world to life, even for those unfamiliar with its source material.
  • The game's care and attention to detail in presenting its setting makes it a unique and special game for Soulslike genre fans who want something fresh.
  • Black Myth consistently realizes its setting in fun and surprising ways, making it more than just a basic Soulslike game.
  • The game's skill system has a lot of depth, and players are free to decide how deep they want to go in building their characters.
  • The game incorporates a spirit system that allows players to collect enemies and bosses to perform special attacks just like in Pokemon. Spells are enjoyable and provide a unique experience like A Pluck of Many.
  • The game offers secrets areas and quests that make the game more enjoyable, with stories being told through the characters you meet.
  • Black Myth: Wukong is an ideal Soulslike game for those who want to experience a fresh and inventive Soulslike game that is more accessible than other Soulslike games.

The Best Boss Fights Of 2024

  • 2024 saw players battling everything from smoky-headed world-enders to really, really big snakes. Here are the best boss fights of 2024.
  • Lady Venomara’s colossal form makes the player feel bite-size in comparison. The golden cobra known as Lady Venomara offers a genuine challenge with a variety of attacks that test players’ mastery of the game’s mechanics.
  • Scylla and the Sirens are an oceanic musical group and a trio of extremely tricky bosses who players will face when navigating through Oceanus in Hades 2.
  • The Sphinx in Dragon's Dogma 2 definitely stands out from the crowd. If players don’t fight her “correctly,” she’ll go flying off into the sunset after growing bored with the player’s lackluster moves.
  • This turn-based Liv battle in Tactical Breach Wizards will leave you with sweaty palms, as the player has to work out a way to effectively attack both the spot where she is currently and where she’s going to end up.
  • Erlang Shen in Black Myth: Wukong is a difficult boss and the ensuing battle is a difficult one, where Erlang can summon a spectral hound, shoot swords at the player and deal thunder damage.
  • Imurah and the Chaos Demon are some of the most challenging bosses in Space Marine 2, players have to survive the Chaos Demon’s attacks long enough to deal damage to Imurah.
  • Stellar Blade is full of phenomenal bosses, but Belial's eldritch horror design makes it truly stand out. Belial
  • Metaphor: ReFantazio’s main antagonist Louis Guibern is a truly formidable opponent in combat, and players will battle him more than once as they progress through Metaphor’s main storyline.
  • Fighting the One-Winged Angel is a difficult task in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, where Sephiroth has no vulnerabilities yet plenty of resistances. He can’t be stopped, slowed, poisoned, silenced, petrified, or put to sleep.
  • The Witness fight in Destiny 2 marked the end of Destiny’s 10-year Light and Darkness Saga, finally allowing players to go toe-to-toe with the biggest bad in the game. The Final Shape’s final boss looks like a cloud of e-cig vapor in a fancy coat, The Witness is surprisingly sturdy, and its attacks pack a serious punch.
  • Messmer The Impaler in Elden Ring's 2024 expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, is a definite standout. The creature’s organic-alien-meets-military-murderbot design makes it truly stand out. Messmer wields an enormous spear, and he isn’t shy about using it.
  • The Silent Hill 2 remake turns a once underwhelming fight into something truly special. The improved level design and combat mechanics play a huge part in making the Eddie fight a terrifying one.

Rankin/Bass’ holiday-special style makes 1977’s The Hobbit a great Christmas watch

  • The 1977 animated movie The Hobbit, produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, is recommended as a great watch for the Christmas holiday season. The film was animated for Rankin/Bass by Topcraft, the studio Hayao Miyazaki eventually called home, and adapted with utmost faithfulness by Romeo Muller. The Hobbit is adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel and features Bilbo Baggins, who is required by Thorin’s band of dwarves to help recapture the Lonely Mountain from the gold-hoarding dragon Smaug. The party travels through various adventures, including a fateful meeting with Gollum, and a barrel ride on the way out from the elven kingdom. Topcraft’s animation is particularly lush throughout the film. The film is strengthened by the stitching action of songs and the soundtrack gives Bilbo and the dwarves’ perilous journey a certain fancifulness absent in Tolkien, but leveled out by the casting. The dedication to Tolkien’s plotting in this movie is compared to a kind of spiritual reverence that was present in Christian-leaning Christmas specials. The film feels like it must be committed to screen in all its impossible glory. If Tolkien didn’t write it, it’s not really in this version of The Hobbit. The film’s brevity is in the name of being downright religious about the text. Bilbo’s face-off with Gollum takes the form of a biblical parable, and a final burst of greed from Middle-earth’s warring factions is met with a pure heart by Bilbo, who convinces different races to create a new continent. It’s epic and full of joy, and if you spend your Christmas holiday at the church of Lord of the Rings, then The Hobbit is a great watch as well.

Corsair MP700 Elite 2 TB NVMe SSD review

  • The biggest issue with PCIe 5.0 drives is heat but Corsair's MP700 Elite aims to solve this with a low power draw and far lower temperatures
  • It's built with Kioxia's latest 218-layer BiCS8 TLC NAND and Phison's E321T controller without any DRAM cache or buffers
  • It is a single-sided M.2-2280 design well-suited for laptops but comes in only 1 TB or 2 TB configuration options
  • Prices range from a relatively respectable $260 to 235 for the version with heatsink but it's not available yet in AUD
  • The cool drive delivers relatively comfortable performance on the sequential front but dominates in random 4Ks
  • In-game performance is middle-of-the-pack with a load time of 7.426 seconds in Final Fantasy's Shadowbringers benchmark
  • The real kicker is the price of this 'mid-range' entry-level option in stiff competition from older hardware
  • It is a solid all-round performer though if you're looking for something a little cheaper and budget is a factor
  • Phison's controller is impressive but technology that could be better used to improve PCIe 6.0 SSD performance
  • Excess heat from most modern PCIe 5.0 drives has already been accounted for and designed around
