Tech Titans Battle For AI Supremacy

  • The battle for Artificial Intelligence (AI) supremacy is transforming industries, economies, and societies. Tech giants such as Meta, formerly Facebook, and Elon Musk's ventures, including Tesla, are among the biggest players in this high-stakes race for control of AI. Meta’s focus on the immersive virtual world called the metaverse could position it as a key player in the AI-powered era. At the same time, Elon Musk’s multifaceted approach ranges from autonomous vehicles at Tesla to AI-driven content moderation at X. Either way, the AI landscape will be shaped by how these tech titans collaborate, innovate, and address ethical and societal challenges posed by the widespread deployment of AI technologies.
  • Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has increasingly shifted its focus from social media to the metaverse — a virtual world powered by immersive technologies such as VR, AR, and AI. As Meta moves into the metaverse, AI plays a critical role in making the digital world more immersive and interactive.
  • Elon Musk leads the AI-driven autonomous driving technology at Tesla, where the Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology is powered by deep learning, computer vision, and sensor fusion. Tesla’s AI system uses a neural network to interpret the environment and learn from every mile driven by Teslas.
  • Elon Musk aims to create an AI-driven version of X (formerly Twitter), where the platform's algorithms not only tailor content but also engage users in a more personalized, dynamic manner. He has also hinted at using AI to combat misinformation, bots, and enhance user interactions with the platform.
  • OpenAI, co-founded by Elon Musk, is the company behind some of the most advanced AI models today, including GPT-3 and GPT-4. Musk’s focus on ethical AI development, transparency, and open-source AI continues to influence the broader AI discourse.
  • As AI continues to evolve, governments and regulatory bodies will be essential to ensure the ethical development and deployment of AI technologies, addressing the risks of bias, safety, and privacy. Partnerships between companies, academic institutions, and governments may become necessary in advancing AI technologies while ensuring safety and fairness.
  • The wider implications of AI in the job market and society are inevitable. As AI-driven automation displaces certain roles and creates new ones, how will workers be retrained? How will societies manage the social and economic implications of mass automation? These are questions that need to be answered in the coming years.
  • The future of AI will depend on how companies collaborate, innovate, and address the ethical and societal challenges posed by the widespread deployment of AI technologies. Who leads the way and how they choose to wield their power will shape the future of AI.

The Australian government is going to force Meta and other tech companies to pay media

  • The Australian government is proposing a new plan to force big tech companies to pay a charge to help fund journalism or enter into commercial deals with news organizations.
  • The plan comes after a system introduced in 2021, the news media bargaining code, saw companies such as Google and Meta pay news organizations for journalism funding.
  • Platforms that choose not to enter or renew commercial agreements with news publishers will pay the charge, and platforms with agreements will be able to offset their liability.
  • The new plan is similar to a system with private health insurance: those without insurance pay a higher Medicare levy.
  • The news bargaining code worked well for the first three years, but Meta announced it would not renew the news media contracts it had in place, while Google has contracts that have been renewed for at least a year.
  • Only companies designated under the bargaining code have to comply, so the government is considering a different approach.
  • The new approach is to say to big tech firms, “If you have contracts with news media businesses, then carry on. If you don’t, then you need to pay a charge.”
  • The revenue from the charge will be used for public interest journalism or pay the news media businesses that would have been paid if they had deals with big platforms.
  • This new approach is similar to an idea proposed in a submission to a parliamentary committee examining this and other online issues.
  • The government will consult on creating a new system that requires big platforms to be subject to the new regime and has set a threshold where only platforms with Australian revenue above $250 million per year will be affected.
