Hurricane Season Safety: What Motorcyclists Need to Know When Riding in Wilmington

  • Wilmington, North Carolina has some of the East Coast's most scenic and exhilarating motorcycle routes but can be treacherous during hurricane season which runs from June to November.
  • High winds, heavy rain, and unpredictable road conditions present unique challenges for motorcyclists, requiring preparation, caution, and quick thinking for safe navigation.
  • Staying informed and prepared by checking weather conditions, and prioritizing safety over adventure can make all the difference for motorcyclists riding during hurricane season.
  • Riders should adjust speed, grip handlebars firmly, stay in the center of the lane, and avoid sudden movements when facing strong winds, particularly crosswinds on bridges and overpasses.
  • For motorcyclists, navigating through standing water that can hide potholes, debris, or washed-out pavement during a flood is a gamble because it can cause a motorcycle to lose traction and flip.
  • To maintain safety during hurricane season, motorcyclists should ensure their motorcycles undergo regular maintenance checks, such as ensuring tires have enough grip for wet roads,  brakes are responsive, and lighting system is enough to pierce through fog and rain.
  • Riding at night during hurricane season significantly increases the risk of an accident because of poor visibility, slick roads, and debris. Riders should avoid nighttime riding when stormy conditions compromise visibility for both them and other motorists.
  • Hydroplaning, a loss of control over a bike during which tires lose contact with the pavement, is a nightmare scenario for any rider, and avoiding this occurs by reducing speed in wet conditions, avoiding sudden braking, and riding through the skid until the tires regain traction.
  • No matter how cautious a rider is, accidents can happen, particularly during hurricane season when  weather and road conditions can change rapidly. Motorcycle accident attorneys can provide legal assistance in filing a motorcycle accident injury claim to recover damages for medical bills, bike repairs, and other losses.
  • Having support ensures the motorcyclist receives compensation for the accident if it was caused by poor visibility, hydroplaning, or other driver's negligence.
