Rankin/Bass’ holiday-special style makes 1977’s The Hobbit a great Christmas watch
- The 1977 animated movie The Hobbit, produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, is recommended as a great watch for the Christmas holiday season. The film was animated for Rankin/Bass by Topcraft, the studio Hayao Miyazaki eventually called home, and adapted with utmost faithfulness by Romeo Muller. The Hobbit is adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel and features Bilbo Baggins, who is required by Thorin’s band of dwarves to help recapture the Lonely Mountain from the gold-hoarding dragon Smaug. The party travels through various adventures, including a fateful meeting with Gollum, and a barrel ride on the way out from the elven kingdom. Topcraft’s animation is particularly lush throughout the film. The film is strengthened by the stitching action of songs and the soundtrack gives Bilbo and the dwarves’ perilous journey a certain fancifulness absent in Tolkien, but leveled out by the casting. The dedication to Tolkien’s plotting in this movie is compared to a kind of spiritual reverence that was present in Christian-leaning Christmas specials. The film feels like it must be committed to screen in all its impossible glory. If Tolkien didn’t write it, it’s not really in this version of The Hobbit. The film’s brevity is in the name of being downright religious about the text. Bilbo’s face-off with Gollum takes the form of a biblical parable, and a final burst of greed from Middle-earth’s warring factions is met with a pure heart by Bilbo, who convinces different races to create a new continent. It’s epic and full of joy, and if you spend your Christmas holiday at the church of Lord of the Rings, then The Hobbit is a great watch as well.

It's been a big year for factory sims, but instead of getting a degree in engineering, I've decided to go back to where it all started for me: modded Minecraft
- A gamer delves back into modded Minecraft with friends, and recounts the tale of how they worked together on a server to create a chicken farm.
- Things go awry, however, when the group starts bickering over whose factory design is best, and the protagonist ends up exiled to gather dirt.
- He eventually gets bored of underground life and pitches a bargain to the surface-dwellers: in exchange for a mob farm, he’ll be allowed back on the main level.
- The group agrees and he’s allowed back up, creating the mob farm and warning the others not to break any of the bottom blocks.
- Disaster strikes when someone gets too excited and breaches the base of the mob farm, unleashing hordes of monsters into the chicken farm.
- The group decides to give factory sim a rest for a while after the chaos, accepting that Minecraft may be more their speed.

The Spirit of the Samurai is an impressive work of stop-motion art paired with a dissatisfying, frustrating action game
- The Spirit of the Samurai’s strongest suit is its striking visuals, its a linear platform hack n’ slasher that's a great work of stop-motion animation style.
- Combat mechanics in The Spirit of the Samurai is confusing with enemies being unpredictable making it harder to attack, & attacks that leave gaps and consume character's stamina immediately, making it difficult to survive.
- The game's mechanics give a sense of individual systems being added arbitrarily and the addition of random items that can be traded for gold leaves people asking why.
- The systems, intriguing as they may be, do not really make much sense & do not enhance the overall experience.
- Also, the game's cutscenes are not in stop-motion animation, which isn't in line with the game's mechanics making the two different parts of the game appear not well-placed together.
- The game that ends within four hours is visually excellent, but it had so many features that a majority adds nothing to the gameplay, making the game frustrating.
- While combats are interesting, it does not feel like they are put in service of something coherent.
- In addition to a technical combat system, there are also two short stealth segments where you play as the samurai's kitten; they do not quite gel and are completely inessential.
- The game had everything to be consistently good, but someone threw an extra box of arbitrary systems into the mix, which resulted in an overall dissatisfying feeling.
- The Spirit of the Samurai is out now on Steam.
