Dune: Prophecy can’t match the ambition of the franchise

  • Dune: Prophecy, the HBO series, can't match the cinematic nature of Denis Villeneuve' Dune movies.
  • While Prophecy is a literary adaptation, its ties to Villeneuve's movies defines it.
  • The Dune franchise under Villeneuve is incompatible with TV - a format is too small to handle it.
  • At this point, it's painfully clear that shrinking Dune's inherently filmic nature is a task not even the Lisan al Gaib himself could accomplish.
  • Longtime Dune devotees may ask why the two miniseries, Frank Herbert's Dune and Frank Herbert's Children of Dune, were not successful.
  • But here's the thing: Those productions were built from the ground up for the small screen.
  • Dune: Prophecy's visual effects, costumes, and sets are light-years ahead of anything Syfy mustered.
  • But the series is a claustrophobic, small-scale affair, reducing the outsized ambitions of Dune franchise.
  • Where Dune: Part One and Part Two paid off a cosmos-wide, multi-millennia master plan, Prophecy's first season gave us sub-Game of Thrones intrigue and a vaguely defined threat.
  • Schapker and co. fuss over the how and the why of it all, failing to grasp that the more granular Dune: Prophecy becomes, the further away from Villeneuve's (and Herbert's) big ideas it gets.

Choosing the Right Technologies for Mobile Application Development Solutions

  • Mobile app development is a complex process that requires a strategic approach to choosing technology.
  • There are three main types of mobile applications namely Native apps, Cross-platform apps and Web apps (PWA).
  • For iOS, the primary technology is Swift — a powerful programming language supported by Apple.
  • For Android, the key programming language is Kotlin.
  • Cross-platform technologies include React native, Flutter, and Xamarin which help reduce development time and cost while maintaining functionality and ease of use.
  • Progressive Web App (PWA) bridges mobile and web apps. It is developed using HTML5, CSS3, and JS.
  • Another important consideration when working on a mobile application development project is choosing the appropriate architecture for the project.
  • As mobile apps become more complex, the microservice architecture allows for better modularity.
  • Data security and user privacy protection are among the top priorities in mobile app development.
  • App performance plays a key role in user satisfaction. Testing automation is important in identifying bug issues early and in guaranteeing optimal application competence.

EA Really Isn't Interested In Making More Dead Space

  • EA rejected an attempt by the original creators to pitch Dead Space 4 earlier this year.
  • Glen Schofield, Christopher Stone and Bret Robbins spoke about the franchise in a recent interview.
  • The trio wanted to pitch a fourth entry in the space-based scare ‘em up to IP owners EA.
  • As AAA games reach budgets of hundreds of millions, sales requirements are becoming close to impossible for all but the biggest-name franchises.
  • Dead Space, while once well-known and well-regarded, had been left untouched for a decade before the remake.
  • Last year’s remake of Dead Space proved a critical hit, reviving the beloved space horror series.
  • However, the remake didn't perform to EA’s expectations last year.
  • Any hopes that internal studio EA Motive would continue to remake the series went out the window.
  • The industry is in a weird place right now; people are really hesitant to take chances on things.
  • Dead Space, however, is exercising nominative determinism and it doesn’t seem likely we’ll see any more games in the franchise anytime soon.

Gaming with expensive AR smart glasses is first-class fun

  • Xreal's new $499 One AR glasses serve as an external display for consoles like the Steam Deck when connected via USB-C cable. It creates a comfortable way to play games, allowing you to look directly ahead rather than hunching over. The glasses are also compact and friendly for travelers who want a big-screen experience while on the go.
  • The Xreal One features embedded OLED displays and side arms containing speakers tuned by Bose. It can create an image equivalent to a 171-inch screen in front of you and tracks your head movements, adjusting the screen's orientation as you move.
  • The One's screens are slightly boosted in terms of size and field of view from the previous version, and it features an interpupillary distance adjustment feature. However, it tops out at 1080p, and it has a small FOV, making parts of the picture appear blurrier than others.
  • The Xreal One's $499 price tag may make it an unnecessary expense for most gamers. The $299 Meta Quest 3S and the Quest 2 offer solid VR experiences at a much lower price, although it is more cumbersome to use a VR headset with a Steam Deck.
  • To use a VR headset with the Steam Deck, you would need an HDMI capture card and possibly a cable or two. You may also have to buy some accessories to make it work. There are options to connect the Quest to your Steam Deck, but it may get a bit messy with cables and dongles.
  • The Xreal One is a more convenient and simpler-to-use gadget that can display your games on a personal big screen. It is impressive for a small gadget, and the One features embedded OLED displays and side arms containing speakers tuned by Bose.
  • There are a few other issues that anyone who's considering buying the Xreal One should know about. While it can reach up to a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate, content looks extra fuzzy if you're looking at low-resolution text and graphics.
  • The way that the Xreal One's displays are merged to create a whole image is effective, although parts of the full picture appear blurrier than others. Additionally, using a VR headset with a Steam Deck is not a plug-and-play affair, and you may need to buy some accessories to make it work.
  • Lastly, another accessory that can help you play games more comfortably is the Mechanism Gaming Pillow. It is like a bean bag for your lap with an adjustable stand on its top, and it supports the weight of the Steam Deck at the viewing angle that's best for your neck.

Opinion: It's Not My GOTY, But This Nintendo Game Was A Standout 2024 Memory

  • Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is a game released this year featuring condensed speedrunning challenges extracted from 13 iconic NES titles.
  • The game offers a World Championship Mode that allows for ranking on a weekly leaderboard and a Survival Mode that pits players against other players' wrist times across three challenges to avoid elimination.
  • It's the only game the author played this year that resulted in an involuntary shout of triumph when they conquered competitors in consecutive speedrunning challenges.
  • The game helped the author discover the deep control scheme nuances of classic titles and even games they already knew well were revealed with the help of the Nintendo Power-inspired Classified Information sheets.
  • The game’s competitive modes are perfect for focusing on specific challenges and helped push the author to consistently improve their personal best timings.
  • The developers could add a new standalone challenge based on the actual 1990 Nintendo World Championships custom cartridge.
  • NWC's snappy game feel and sound design hook players to improve their PB, and it’s an even better experience playing with an NES controller.
  • The game may not have been the flashiest in 2024, but it remains a standout with plenty of untapped potential.
  • It is an homage to the glory days of the NES and the 8-bit culture that surrounded it and a celebration of the timeless classics that still shape love for gaming.
  • NWC is BY FAR, the most underrated game of the year, a master class on how smart presentation and design can elevate a novel premise to a can’t-miss weekly event.
