Google DeepMind’s latest AI models: super-accurate weather forecasting and playable 3D worlds
- Google DeepMind has released two powerful large language models, including GenCast, focused on surpassing current weather forecasting algorithms through bringing decades’ worth of ‘reanalysis data’ through machine learning to offer probabilistic 15-day forecasts, outperforming the most accurate system in current use, that of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
- GenCast offers its 15-day forecasts in just eight minutes using a single TPU v5 tensor processing unit, as opposed to the ECMWF’s supercomputer requiring thousands of processors for a comparable forecast, offering a “decades’ worth” improvement in just one year.
- GenCast accounts for various possibilities through probabilistic modelling, meaning that AI-enhanced forecasting is far more nuanced than conventional deterministic forecasting.
- GenCast will soon be open-sourced on GitHub and can be integrated with Google Earth, allowing forecast predictions to be accessed.
- Genie 2, the second iteration of DeepMind’s Generative Interactive Environments tool, offers expansive and playable 3-D game worlds with animations, physics and even support for player interactions through simple text prompts supported by one reference image.
- While imperfect, with a lack of sustainability and an occasional loss of coherency after 20 seconds, the model does show significant potential, demonstrating capacity for various perspectives and simulations supporting counterfactuals.
- DeepMind expects the technology to provide benefits for training AI models, especially in applying text prompts to advanced making-based 3D world simulations.
- Genie 2 offers a glimpse at the possibility of AI-generated gaming worlds, and while DeepMind has offered no clear information on release plans, it has confirmed that it is working on it.

- Google’s Pixel 9 Pro is the best phone you can buy today and the author is not sure there’s a phone in 2nd place worth considering.
- The design of the Pixel 9 Pro still feels as premium as any on the market and is refreshing to look at compared to Samsung or Apple's current devices.
- Interactions on the Pixel 9 Pro remind users that haptics, animations and software tuning and accessibility all matter in daily use.
- Unlocking the Pixel 9 Pro has improved since past Pixel phones. It comes with a real (ultrasonic) in-display fingerprint reader that combines with an excellent face unlock to get into the phone effortlessly.
- The author is happy to tinker with the newest of new software and the Pixel 9 Pro gives the latest in software updates. No other Android phone gives as much software.
- Pixel 9 Pro's ecosystem is really improving with syncing with notifications between other Pixel devices, timers from Google Nest devices, etc., the only thing is Quick Share app on MacOS.
- One of the reasons the author is sticking with the Pixel 9 Pro is having a choice in size; for Pixel 9 Pro he chose the XL version and he adores it, crossing off the phone for those users who often complain about not having smaller phone choices.
- Battery life on Android 15 is concerning, and the author finds himself plugging in Pixel 9 devices more regularly now or at least making sure he’s constantly topped off throughout a day.
- Google has not adopted Qi2 or the new magnetic capabilities of wireless charging yet, which upsets author as he has a whole ecosystem of neat MagSafe chargers around his house.
- After 3 months of use the Pixel 9 Pro is the phone of choice for the author and he urges the readers of the article to try and take it from him.
