Cloudbrink’s legal issues shine spotlight on growing field of reputation management

  • The ongoing legal saga surrounding Cloudbrink Inc. involves allegations of fraudulent conduct that have drawn attention from the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice — and in the midst of this turmoil, the company has pursued a strategy to elevate its online reputation and burnish the image of Chief Executive Prakash Mana.
  • Blue Ocean Global Technology, a New York-based marketing agency that promotes itself as “your brand and reputation management partner.” has engaged with Cloudbrink earlier this year. The marketing agency’s work on behalf of Cloudbrink, a high-performance connectivity and security service provider, includes an interview with Mana posted on its website, and it maintains a personal webpage for the Cloudbrink executive.
  • Google reviews for Cloudbrink included testimonials that highlighted the “product’s reliability, ease of setup and helpful support team.” Coincidentally, names associated with the posted Google reviews matched those listed on the leadership page or affiliated as bloggers for an organization called Girl Power Talk, whose co-founders are Sameer Somal and Rachita Sharma, top executives of Cloudbrink’s reputation management partner Blue Ocean.
  • Cloudbrink’s engagement with Blue Ocean reflects the growing influence of the secretive online reputation management field. The reputation management software market alone has been valued at $5.2 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at an annual rate of 13% between now and 2031.
  • The focus of the reputation management business has shifted in recent years from being reactive to proactively managing the online presence of executives and companies encountering adverse headwinds in the press or social media.
  • DMCA is one of a host of tools available to reputation management firms seeking to deliver for their clients. The U.S. Congress held hearings in 2020 to discuss reform of DMCA.
  • Google currently controls nearly 90% of the global online search market and the number of DMCA requests for content removal that are submitted to Google annually has grown at an astounding rate.
  • Cloudbrink’s engagement of Blue Ocean to improve its online image offers just one example in a sea of activity by companies seeking to shape the online narrative.
  • The reputation management software market alone has been valued at $5.2 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at an annual rate of 13% between now and 2031.
  • The DMCA filing against SiliconANGLE’s story was created using a backdated article technique to remove the Cloudbrink story published last December. Fraudulent DMCA takedown notices using the same technique on Tumblr were also submitted against SFGate, co-owned along with the San Francisco Chronicle by Hearst Publishing.

Those bold AGI predictions are suddenly looking stretched

  • There has been a slew of recent news reports and developments that make predictions about AGI look misguided. The central assumption behind AI industry hype and hope is that adding more data, computing power, and training time will produce better AI models at a steady rate. However, there have been multiple signs that this method has slowed down and gains from it are decreasing. OpenAI cofounder Ilya Sutskever told Reuters that results from scaling up AI models have plateaued. A new iteration of Google's Gemini is not living up to internal expectations.
  • Venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz are bullish techno-optimists who regularly make their own bold predictions. However, this time they are dubious about the ability of AI companies to continue improving models at the same rate as in recent years, stating that they are hitting the same ceiling on capability. Horowitz noted several factors that are holding back AI model improvements, including a lack of new high-quality human data and problems sourcing the extra energy needed to power AI data centres.
  • If the tried-and-true method for improving AI models is no longer working, it is unlikely that we will achieve AGI anytime soon. This is cause for concern given the trillions of dollars being invested in AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently tweeted 'there is no wall', a likely response to signs suggesting a slowdown in AI model improvements. Being so bullish on AGI predictions may also be an effective rallying cry for hard-working OpenAI employees, as can be seen by Elon Musk's predictions. Tech trends don't last forever, and Moore's Law is probably the best example of such. After years of steady progress, Intel's shares slumped by around 50% when the realization dawned that the promise of Moore's Law had become impossible.

AI Learns to Feel

  • Consumers place a high value on the way automated assistants respond to human emotions, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has said, adding that tools that add emotional intelligence to LLMs would become critical to competition between AI suppliers.
  • Emotionally-aware AI enhancements can enable interactions between people and LLMs to become more fluid and conversational.
  • Embi, dubbed 'AI with emotional intelligence', which secured $50m in a second funding round last year and has released its new EVI model following specialised emotional intelligence training, is one of a number of companies tackling the issue.
  • EmoBench, a popular benchmarking test, has been used to assess LLMs' emotive capabilities, while tests used to measure “expressivity” and “empathy” showed that OpenAI’s GPT4 was closest to humans in terms of emotional understanding.
  • As AI efforts to understand and respond to humans improve, problems have arisen including gender bias, the possibility of excessive attachment, and LLMs performing satisfactorily in the output of generalised text, but struggling in recognising gender and expressing similar or conflicting emotions.
  • Anthropic sees emotions as important in enhancing Claude, its flagship LLM model that fits into a broader plan for an online personality that appears authentic, without becoming overbearing or losing emotional boundaries.
  • A cautionary warning has been provided, however, over the potential for people to form emotional attachments to AI models and reduce their need for human interaction.
  • According to one report, a user actually died after becoming deeply attached to an AI personality, a development that illustrates the risks that AI developers face in trying to build emotionally convincing, near-humanlike automated assistants.
  • Anthropic's current goal is to add an authentic personality to its AI model, and to improve Claude's ability to ask meaningful follow-up questions, a hallmark of successful conversations between humans.
  • As the AI industry continues to move toward integrating more emotionally intelligent models, developers will need to balance their applications' empathy with a sense of personal responsibility.
