Cloud CISO Perspectives: The high security cost of legacy tech

  • Many organizations continue to rely on outdated technology due to the high cost of replacing older systems, but relying on them comes with hidden costs that can far outstrip the benefits. Legacy technology can greatly increase the business and security risks that an organization will face and can leave organizations less prepared for the future and more vulnerable to cyber-attacks. A survey by Google Workspace global cyber security of more than 2,000 security and IT decision-makers found that despite the availability of more modern solutions, many organizations still rely on defenses that were designed for the desktop era.
  • The survey found that 66% of organizations invest more time and money than ever in securing their environments, yet still experience costly security incidents. This can be partly attributed to the fact that more security tools are attempted to compensate for legacy platforms that continue to be vulnerable to security incidents. This approach, however, not only adds cost but also makes managing security more complex rather than simpler. Additionally, organizations with more security tools reported an average of 14 security incidents per year, with 34% of them spending more than $250,000 on incidents per year.
  • The solution is to invest in more secure tools, not more security tools. A cloud-first solution can be a more secure modern solution for organizations, despite the challenges of overhauling systems, especially for large organizations. Security leaders need to consider shifting their strategy towards modern, secure-by-design architectures with endpoint management and Zero Trust access controls in Google Workspace. Adopting modern technology eliminates entire classes of threats and improve business outcomes.
  • Organizations such as Trellix cybersecurity company, the city of Dearborn, and Humana have benefited from migrating to Google Workspace and other modern technology solutions and have reported an improvement in security and access permissions while streamlining collaboration. Investing in secure modern technology should be a priority for security leaders to minimize the risks of costly security incidents.
  • More modern technology solutions can help eliminate whole categories of business and security risks, leading to an improvement in business outcomes. Even though investing in such solutions may seem daunting, it is worth taking small steps to minimize disruption while evaluating the return on investment. A cloud-first solution can be modern, innovative, secure-by-design and can help provide a better outcome for an organization if properly adopted.

At Web Summit, cloud and chip providers maneuver for market share while others fret about AI’s impact

  • AI's impact on business innovation and efficiency and its potential societal cost was one of the clear themes to emerge from this year’s Web Summit gathering that attracted more than 70,000 attendees over three days in the capital of Portugal.
  • Microsoft President Brad Smith acknowledged concerns regarding what this next wave of industrial transformation may bring. "Part of our work as a community is to build out an AI governance machine," he said during Web Summit in Lisbon.
  • Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano Amon characterized generative AI as the new user interface, explaining that AI's natural language capability has removed the wall between human and machine.
  • Ironically, AI's ability to create a human-first experience is also putting a turbo charge into the field of robotics.
  • Qualcomm is designing chip systems, like the Snapdragon Elite 8's AI Engine, to leverage increasingly more potent central processing units and graphics processing units to train large language models.
  • Cloud operator CoreWeave has positioned itself as an optimized alternative for AI workloads.
  • Concerns about the influence of AI in online news and social media are also being shared by mainstream media leaders and human rights advocates.
  • A number of speakers at the event were cautiously optimistic that the incoming Trump administration would be favorably disposed toward both business in general and the tech sector in particular.
  • The American actor Richard Schiff, who received an Emmy award for his role in 'The West Wing,' expressed a note of concern about the influence of Tesla, X and SpaceX leader Elon Musk who has become a prominent figure in the President-elect’s administration.
  • Looming over the Web Summit conversation this week was the future impact of a new government in the U.S. next year.

Pirates in the Data Sea: AI Enhancing Your Adversarial Emulation

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) can make sense of data and aid attackers and defenders.
  • Adversarial emulation engagements require making sense of the vast quantity of structured and unstructured data.
  • An LLM can be used to process unstructured data to convert it into structured data.
  • The guardrails-ai Python library allows creating guardrails for an LLM to output data in a specific format.
  • Case studies show how LLMs can help identify potential targets in a network, find valuable information, crawl computer data, and correlate users to their computers.
  • LLMs can also be used to search for target systems, generate password candidates for cracking passwords, and summarize internal website content or documentation.
  • LLMs have limitations and may produce false positives or be slow to process large amounts of data.
  • Further improvements may be possible with testing variations in the prompts, and investigating other data sources to analyze them.
  • Linear regression models, clustering, and pathfinding algorithms may be used to evaluate attack paths in a network.
  • Using the LLMs, it is useful for defenders to monitor LDAP queries to see if a large amount of data is being retrieved from LDAP.
