The creators of Sifu and Absolver are making a football game, set many decades from now
- Sloclap, the studio behind martial arts games Sifu and Absolver, is working on a new multiplayer 5v5 football game, Rematch, due in summer 2025 that takes place many decades in the future.
- Players only control one character on the pitch, with no AI-handling of the other characters, making it distinctly different from other popular football games such as FIFA and Pro Evo.
- Rematch encourages collaboration over individual flair. Players can receive passes, mark opponents, move around the pitch when not in possession of the ball.
- Players communicate with their teammates using voice chat or message wheel. The game is about being a part of the football team rather than individual glory, according to Sloclap's co-founder, Pierre Tarno.
- The controls are apparently straightforward, with the same button having multiple uses depending on the context. Defenders have some additional mechanics while goalkeepers can lunge, dive & switch to midfield.
- Rematch will have volley actions too, which involve kicking the ball before it lands. Sloclap says this speeds up the game and makes passing more exciting.
- Set in the near future, Rematch will be played in animated holographic boxes that continually show match scores and idyllic images of the outside world. Walled-stadium format reduces the need for ball retrieval, leading to faster games.
- Rematch does not depict the commercialisation and financial excesses of the present-day sport rather, it apparently side-steps this to offer a more positive and collaborative view of the sport.
- The game is centred around community and collaborative values and attempts to distil the best aspects of football into one game.
- Rematch is hoping to use football as a tool to build worlds and different futures. Given this approach, the game can offer a new way into the culture of football, as the sport becomes increasingly popular around the world.
