- The first step is to request the data which can take up to a month to gather and retrieve.
- The data is provided in JSON format and contains both data and metadata.
- To analyze the data, the author created a simplified order item which contains data such as id, description, category, price, refunded, timestamp, year, month, day_of_month and day_of_week.
- Using this order item, the author wrote a few scripts to parse the information from the export into a common format and stored the summary in a file.
- The author created a small Dash webapp to visualize his spending in graphs, focusing on financial data, spending per year and category, and spending per day of the week.
- The data also contains personalized advertising data, search history data (including device and OS version) and product review data.
- Overall, the author found the data Amazon has stored on him quite comprehensive, and he suggests that Amazon provides customers with such statistics directly.
- The author believes that some of the data storage practices of Amazon, such as opt-out being per marketplace and not global, seem shady.
- The author provides code snippets and a Github repository for his scripts and webapp.
