2025 MG 3 review

  • MG has finally launched a compact hatch in Australia, and the expectations from this new hatchback are relatively high. Compared to the older MG 3, this new model offers better safety features specialized in driver's assistance technology, and it did not compromise on the comfort and safety aspects. Pricing can be an issue for some buyers, but MG 3's entry-level is available under $25,000, which is still affordable for this segment.
  • The new MG 3 Excite has a simple design, with no hybrid tech present in the entry model. The engine installed is a non-hybrid four-cylinder, which provides 81 kW of power and 142 Nm of torque. The sole Excite petrol price is above the former MG 3 base price, which was $19,990, but MG 3 still has a better price than its competitors.
  • The interior of the Excite model provides a plastic steering wheel, which is among the aspects that bring the cost down to keep the car's entry-level price as low as possible. The driver’s view displays a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster that adds a touch of modern design. An infotainment system with a 10.25-inch display is present, but it lacks wireless smartphone integration. The car provides six-way manual driver and four-way passenger seat adjustment. The cabin is simple, with glossy black plastic surfaces, cloth seats, air conditioning with rear vents, and a push-button start, among other things.
  • MG 3's safety features and technology position the car well in the affordable hatchback segment. It has an ANCAP safety rating of three-stars, and although it has a lower rating compared to other competitors, the car still offers a range of safety features such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and adaptive cruise control. The Excite version has blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, lane-departure and lane-keep assists, and a speed limit recognition system which helps with the car's on-road safety.
  • The MG 3 comes with a non-hybrid 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 81 KW of power and 142 Nm of torque. With these power outputs, the car is built for city driving with loads of safety features rather than long highway stints. The car's engine, paired with a CVT automatic transmission, struggles on uphill freeway on-ramps but does relatively well for driving in the city. The steering is light, acceleration is sufficient, and the suspension soaks up bumps well.
  • MG offers a 10-year or 250,000km warranty, 7-year roadside assistance plan, 12-month or 10,000km servicing interval and capped-price servicing for seven years, with the total capped-price service cost amounts to $2514.
  • Overall, the MG 3 Excite is an excellent affordable commuter. Although the entry-level model presents plastic steering and glossy black plastic surfaces, the car has a comfortable cabin and provides a better driving experience to its competitors in the same segment. There are some shortcomings, such as the lack of a manual gearbox and the requirement to turn the climate control system off and on manually, but still, it's worth considering the MG 3 Excite if you need a cheap and reliable car for daily use.
