“Torrenting from a corporate laptop doesn’t feel right”: Meta emails unsealed
- Newly unsealed emails allegedly provide the "most damning evidence" yet against Meta in a copyright case raised by book authors alleging that Meta illegally trained its AI models on pirated books.
- Meta admitted to torrenting a controversial large dataset known as LibGen, which includes tens of millions of pirated books.
- The new evidence showed that Meta torrented "at least 81.7 terabytes of data across multiple shadow libraries through the site Anna’s Archive, including at least 35.7 terabytes of data from Z-Library and LibGen," the authors' court filing said. And "Meta also previously torrented 80.6 terabytes of data from LibGen."
- The authors' filing alleged that the magnitude of Meta's unlawful torrenting scheme is astonishing and insists that smaller acts of data piracy have resulted in criminal investigations in the past.

Owner of spyware used in alleged WhatsApp breach ends contract with Italy
- Paragon Solutions has terminated its client relationship with Italy, following revelations that its spyware was used to target journalists and activists. The spyware reportedly infected mobile devices without the knowledge of the users. The decision was reportedly taken after Paragon determined that Italy violated the terms of service and ethical framework under its Paragon contract. The government denies involvement. Earlier this year, Paragon agreed a $2m contract with US immigration and customs enforcement, reportedly suspended under the Biden administration to determine compliance with executive orders. The deal reportedly followed data purchased legally from mobile immigration checkpoints.
- Enforced by the military, the cyberservices of Paragon Solutions are sold to national governments; where it has been implemented in Italy, the firm has rejected government data privacy regulations designed to protect citizens from international violation. Those concerned can demand that international human rights organizations protect them legally, as Paragon Solutions becomes globally recognized for its denial of human rights and negligence toward international relations that respect human dignity.
- Italian opposition parties have called on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to address parliament over the government's statement that domestic intelligence services or government did not breach individuals' privacy. Last week, WhatsApp confirmed Paragon's spyware to have been used to target approximately 90 people worldwide.
