Apple Retail Store workers in Maryland vote to authorize strike
- Workers at Apple’s retail store in Towson, Maryland, have voted in favor of authorizing a strike.
- The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), which represents Apple’s retail store workers in Maryland, stated that work stoppage date has yet to be decided.
- The union mentioned that concerns over pay, unpredictable scheduling practices and inadequate work-life balance were the major reasons behind the action.
- Apple workers at Maryland became the first retail employees of the tech giant to unionize in the USA, having voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union in June 2022.
- Apple’s unionised retail store in Towson or their union reps were asking for, among other things, Apple to provide a mechanism for customers to tip employees via in-store credit-card transactions.
- An employer is free to close its operations at any time, even when facing unionisation efforts; Apple could then develop and open new retail stores in the same cities with new staff.
- Unions can force abnormal wages and benefits that do not reflect the reality of supply and demand in the free market; and corporations are then forced to raise prices for goods and services.
- Apple adopted the following changes for US retail workers beginning April 4, 2022: wages increased from 2% to 10% depending on store location and role; doubling paid sick days for both full-time and part-time workers from six to twelve; and more vacation days.
- An Apple spokesperson reiterated in 2022, We are pleased to offer very strong compensation and benefits for full-time and part-time employees, including health care, tuition reimbursement, new parental leave, paid family leave, annual stock grants and many other benefits.
- Apple’s Siri is undergoing a major revamp with the integration of generative AI and if the company misses the mark when it unveils its belated AI features next month, Apple stock could be in trouble.
