Apple desperately needs its Next Big Thing

  • Apple needs to find its next big thing as sales of iPhone decline and growth of other products slow, which could be a challenge for CEO Tim Cook who has yet to launch anything revolutionary, unlike his predecessor Steve Jobs who came up with the iMac and iPhone.
  • Cook's strategy that focussed on short-term profit over long-term strategy is now casting a shadow over Apple's future as the iPhone, responsible for more than half the company's revenue slowed in sales after dominating the US market. Focus on revenue rather than phone sales continued for some years but in 2022 sales slowed, and Apple's other products took a hit.
  • The Justice Department's antitrust case against Apple aims to reduce the barrier to switching and remove the exclusive benefits of using Apple devices. In Europe, lawmakers are calling for laws to ensure third-party apps and stores can be loaded onto Apple devices breaking the monopoly of the App Store. This would be devastating for App Store revenue since up to 30% of each purchase goes to Apple.
  • Tripp Mickle's book "After Steve" details how Cook was instrumental in setting up Apple's tax-avoidance mechanisms. Cook slowly reined in the powerful design team and eventually led Jobs' ally Jony Ive, the chief design officer to leave the company in 2019 after reducing his time there. Already this year, Apple's Vision Pro headset and Apple Car have failed.
  • Apple moved employees from their car project over to artificial intelligence (AI) since it failed to deliver with other products. Plans to incorporate AI into releases of its iPhone, iPad, and Mac software may attract short-term investor interest but it's unlikely to be the kind of product that makes a big difference to the bottom line. It's unclear how Cook will promote the next big thing.
  • Investors aren't too despondent since Apple has increased its profit margin despite struggles to grow its revenues. Nevertheless, Apple's shares are down this year, and it's lagging behind the Nasdaq-100 index.
  • Apple needs to create the next big thing since it would be unfortunate to lose ground to savvy upstarts like other once-dominant firms such as IBM and AT&T who lost their innovative edge once they reached a particular size.
  • Apple's pivot towards generative AI to sustain interest instead of making way for market-shattering scale products is unlikely to be a game-changer for the bottom line, especially considering growing concerns about the cost of generative-AI tools.
  • Apple has been a modern-day monopoly that has sent televisions, records, CDs and tapes into obscurity. The company is still relevant and occasionally claims the title of the most valuable publicly traded company in the world.
  • Apple is now facing a pivotal moment, and Cook needs to have more product-based thinking, which is vital to bring new ideas and market-shattering scale products that would keep tech buyers coming back to Apple.
