How The Terminator is shaping our concerns about AI, 40 years on

  • The Terminator film franchise has exerted an outsize influence on how society frames arguments around the existential dangers posed by AI-controlled machines, say experts. The films drew attention to fears of a machine uprising and AI technologies that “absolutely will not stop… until you are dead”. Contemporary dangers include introducing biases into algorithms for employment applications and the risk of certain types of jobs, such as software programming, being replaced by generative AI. But it is the existential threat that dominates public discussion. The six Terminator films often distract from the benefits offered by AI.
  • Elon Musk is among the technology leaders who have helped keep focus on the alleged existential threat superintelligent AI could pose. But likening AI to the Terminator has led to criticism from some, who argue an undue focus on hypothetical scenarios has overshadowed the benefits of AI technologies.
  • However, genuine concerns persist about the military applications of autonomous weapons, which experts warn could be deadly with superhuman accuracy. AI is already being used to support military targeting although human drone operators continue to play a role in challenging machines' recommendations. Countries such as the US specify human operators should exercise “appropriate levels of human judgment over the use of force” when operating autonomous weapon systems.
  • AI systems are also being built into small, cheap aerial drones and ground-based robots for use on battlefields. Critics argue there have already been instances of these “loitering munitions”, designed to hover over battlefields, being used without suitable human controllers.
  • The international community, small nations and superpowers alike, need to cooperate and find ways to manage the ethical and legal challenges of AI in times of geopolitical upheaval, according to experts. This will require political will, argue the specialists, if dystopian futures predicted by such films as The Terminator, with its time-travelling cyborgs and robot uprisings, can be avoided.

Managing By Measurable Metrics Leads to Immeasurable Losses

  • American economist Milton Friedman’s shareholder primacy approach made profit maximization the firm’s primary goal.
  • This approach pays off today but hits hard later and has destroyed many businesses.
  • In an effort to boost profits, Boeing’s CEOs squeezed its suppliers and believed that they should receive more value from employees and suppliers than they gave.
  • Running a company on visible figures alone is like raising kids based just on their school grades.
  • Ignoring everything that can’t be measured may be inappropriate, unethical, and impractical and it can destroy long-term value for the company.
  • Creating value for customers and capturing value from them isn’t measurable. The value captured is measured in money while the value created is immeasurable.
  • The additional value from employees, suppliers, and customers can’t be measured but it exists in the form of enthusiasm, creativity, loyalty, and support.
  • Surrogates like customer satisfaction or employee engagement tell little about those real people’s thoughts and feelings.
  • In order to capture this additional value, create extra value in the form of attention by talking to customers and employees.
  • Never rely solely on numbers when it comes to people. You can’t measure them with a flat ruler.

The People Taking PhonePe From UPI App To Super App

  • PhonePe's annual report reveals over INR 5,000 Cr revenue in FY24 after becoming the second Indian startup to reach this milestone, the first being Paytm.
  • PhonePe has diversified from its origins as a UPI app by harnessing its user base to sell insurance and lending services.
  • It has also launched a stockbroking platform and an appstore to challenge Google's monopoly.
  • Each of these services is run as a separate startup within PhonePe, with separate vertical function heads.
  • Hypergrowth has necessitated centralised functions such as finance, HR, and administration, and the company boasts an institutional knowledge across the organisation.
  • CEO Sameer Nigam has updated PhonePe's corporate governance processes to mimic those of a public company.
  • PhonePe is the market leader for UPI payments, but its dependence on this service has kept it from going public until it can diversify.
  • The company's emphasis on separate verticals, with different products for each, means it relies on each vertical to acquire new customers rather than relying on the PhonePe brand.
  • Vertically-integrated superapp services are considered a challenge for public markets, so PhonePe's modular approach may do better with retail investors.
  • PhonePe's high leadership retention and careful horizontal-vertical integration may enable it to position itself as the super app model that performs best in the public markets.

The WordPress Drama Won't Kill Your Business. Here's Why.

  • Despite the recent WordPress drama, there is no threat to your WordPress-driven business operations or employment prospects as a developer, as WordPress is simply too big to fail or mess up.
  • The drama concerning inter-company legal battles, plugin takeovers and WP Engine's alleged 'cancer' comments have resulted in community infighting, harsh language and corporate theatre, but the actual platform will go from strength to strength due to its open-source base and massive ecosystem.
  • As a business owner or site manager using WP Engine or running Advanced Custom Fields, there is no need to worry over a worst-case scenario or panic as, even if parts of these experiences are problematic, your data and ownership of your site is considered too vital to break.
  • Millions of businesses are reliant on WordPress sites, and billions of revenue flow through them daily, meaning the system is too big to fail.
  • It is time to stay focused on real business growth as competitors who are spending their energy worrying about corporate drama are losing focus, and growing businesses focus on fundamentals at times of market uncertainty.
  • Valuable advice for present and future site owners and developers is to remain up-to-date with security patches, keep your backups current, take advantage of WordPress's portable code and data, and double down on your singular focus on serving your customers and growing your business.
  • WordPress's success, and consequently yours, is based on its open-source nature and massive ecosystem, realized by the various companies and developers who work to take advantage of it.
  • It is the strength of the core technology that guarantees your website, ecommerce system, and SEO rankings will remain solid.
  • In conclusion, the WordPress drama will not bring down your business, so there is no need for drastic moves, panic, or changes in platform.
  • The smart move is to double down, because, as successful WordPress developers know, its companies don't matter, but its open-source nature does.
