  • The Malaysian government's upcoming excise duty revisions are expected to result in significant price increases for locally-assembled (CKD) cars.
  • The revisions, initially scheduled to take effect in 2020 but repeatedly deferred, will introduce a new method of calculating the open market value (OMV) of CKD vehicles, which directly impacts the tax and selling price.
  • The implementation of these regulations could lead to CKD car prices going up by as much as 20%, causing potential challenges for carmakers and consumers.
  • Analysts predict lower vehicle sales in 2025 due to the OMV revisions and targeted RON 95 petrol subsidies.

KL-SG HSR to be revived? Cabinet to decide by Jan, followed by discussions with S’pore if ‘Yes’ – Loke

  • Transport Minister, Anthony Loke, says cabinet decision on reviving KL-SG HSR project to be made in December or early January. This policy paper will not be the final verdict but for future discussions with Singapore.
  • The KL-SG HSR project has been making headlines for a decade now with no decisions being finalised. It was supposed to have started construction in 2018 and to be completed by 2025.
  • Both Malaysia and Singapore agreed to postpone the project in 2018 to allow for identification of cost reduction options. This postponement has resulted in Malaysia paying $15 million as compensation for the abortive costs incurred by Singapore.
  • In May 2020, the deferment was further extended to December 31 of the same year. As of January 1, 2021, a joint statement confirmed that both governments had not reached an agreement and, therefore, officially called off the HSR project.
  • In March 2021, Malaysia announced that it had paid $102.8 million to Singapore for costs incurred for the development of the HSR project as well as in relation to its extension of suspension.
  • During July 2023, it was reported that the current Madani administration is looking for a public-private partnership model that will see the HSR built without using public funds.
  • The HSR project was initially planned as a 350km double-track route with eight stops in total, including eight stops in total between Malaysia and Singapore.
  • The HSR was meant to reduce rail travel time between KL and Singapore down to 90 minutes by running trains at average speeds of 300km/h.
  • In 2018, an alternative upgrading existing infrastructure instead of developing a new line was proposed, estimated to cost RM20bn, compared to the HSR's cost of between RM60bn to RM70bn.
  • Since the initial agreement in 2013, Malaysia has had four prime ministers and it remains to be seen what the final outcome of the HSR project will be.

2024’s Most Sought-After Classic Cars

  • Iconic Auctioneers emerged victorious in the classic car auction scene in 2024, setting world records of sales in celebrity-owned cars and Fords. The British racing driver Tim Harvey’s 1990 Ford Sierra RS500 and the two Ford RS200 models, produced in 1987 and 1989 respectively, made notable impacts with the auction house. The auctions’ real showstopper, however, was the sale of the 2010 Ford Focus RS500 Mk2. The auction house was entrusted to sell the bespoke Defender owned by Guy Ritchie and the Land Rover Heritage Defender owned by the famous actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson. One car that particularly stood out was the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Group B Homologation Special, which set a new UK auction record, and was valued at GBP 227,250. The auction house is confident that despite some challenges in the collectible car market in 2024, it ended the year on a high note.
  • For Ford enthusiasts, Iconic Auctioneers set multiple world records for sales of Ford cars this year, including the 1990 Ford Sierra RS500 BTCC, a 1987 Ford RS200 and a 1989 Ford RS200. Iconic Auctioneers also set personal sales records with a collection of Ford Focuses manufactured in the 2000s, which includes a 2003 Ford Focus RS Mk1 and a 2010 Ford Focus RS Mk2. The latter being the most sought-after model for Iconic Auctioneers was the 2010 Ford Focus RS500 Mk2.
  • Iconic Auctioneers achieved significant success in the auction of celebrity-owned cars. The auction house sold a 1980 Ferrari owned by English rock musician Chris Rea and Guy Ritchie’s 2011 Land Rover Defender. The latest Lamborghini Murciélago Manual and Diablo VT 6.0 SE Coupé models were also presented for sale. A staggering sale of GBP 425,500 was commanded by the 1985 MG Metro 6R4 'Group B'.
  • Despite some fluctuations in vintage sports car sales in 2024, iconic Automobile Auctioneers ended the year with continued enthusiasm from bidders in more than 18 countries in Europe and the Americas. The classic car auction company saw renewed interest in rare and high-quality collectibles, including vintage sports cars and celebrity-owned automobiles.
  • Hubbard, managing director of Iconic Auctioneers believes that one reason for the success in Fords in auctions is the company’s reputation for being "THE auction house to sell unique Fords". The auction house has currently sold ten RS200s, "more than any other auction house".
  • The Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Group B Homologation Special was the headlining car of the Competition and Collectors’ Classic Sale at Silverstone Circuit, selling for an impressive GBP 227,250.
  • The auction house set an auction record for the latest Lamborghini Murciélago Manual, selling at a live auction for GBP 149,625.
  • The Lamborghini DIablo VT 6.0 SE Coupé model was one of just 42 produced, providing previous owner with a desirable collector's car.
  • The audio house sold the bespoke Defender owned by Guy Ritchie at a price of GBP 84,375, and Rowan Atkinson’s Land Rover Heritage Defender for GBP 83,250.
  • The 1985 MG Metro 6R4 emerged as a highlight at the Supercar Fest Sale in May. It was sold for GBP 425,500. The Metro 6R4 emerged as a highly sought-after rally legend and was crafted to International Tarmac specification, ultimately commanding such a high price.
  • One thing is sure, the auction of classic cars has resulted in significant sales in 2024 and the trend is expected to continue in the upcoming years as well. The iconic auctioneers believe in the enduring appeal of high-end, limited-edition vehicles encouraging enthusiasts to keep bidding.
