Teaching a drone to fly without a vertical rudder

  • Most airplanes use vertical tails or rudders to prevent Dutch roll instabilities.
  • The B-2 stealth bomber uses drag flaps positioned at the tips of its wings to stabilize the aircraft.
  • Birds use lift instead of drag to overcome Dutch roll instabilities in their flight.
  • A study led by David Lentink aims to understand birds' rudderless flight mechanics.

Busy London airspace now home to medical drones flying over people (and historic landmarks)

  • The implementation of a medical drone service between Guy's Hospital and St. Thomas' Hospital in London by Wing, Apian, and the NHS has brought on-demand medical drone delivery service to one of Europe's busiest and most complicated air spaces.
  • The two facilities are less than two miles apart, but it can take 30 minutes or more for blood samples to be transported between them on a motorbike or van through the busy London traffic.
  • With this medical drone delivery service, it can now be done in under three minutes, which can save lives for patients waiting to undergo surgery or facing complications.
  • Navigating drones in dense, historic airspace is a difficult task. In London's case, NATS handles the air traffic management through a public-private partnership in a regulated and restricted airspace.
  • The possibility of safely integrating drone deliveries even over populated areas is a major step toward urban air mobility.
  • For now, only 10 on-demand medical deliveries are allowed per day which is less compared to other Wing's operations with Walmart where multiple drone deliveries per hour are made.
  • The project is currently a trial running for six months and if it proves to be successful, it has the potential to become a model for drone delivery of other medical supplies, not just within London but across the NHS
  • Apian, a healthcare logistics start-up founded by NHS doctors, has already trialed similar drone deliveries in rural areas.
  • The implementation of this drone delivery service could lead to an NHS-wide drone network that would make healthcare deliveries as seamless and immediate as ordering from a favorite delivery app.
  • Currently, the drones are used to transport blood samples, but as the drone network grows there is potential to use drones for blood, PPE, or medication delivery in a more automated and scalable way. As the economy becomes increasingly service-based, this marks a major shift in how drone services will transform urban infrastructure

Elon Musk says human-piloted fighter jets like the F-35 are obsolete. Drone tech can't yet fill the gap.

  • Elon Musk called crewed fighters like the F-35 obsolete in the drone era.
  • Small, cheap drones are transforming land warfare. But for military assets like the F-35, drones are still too slow and lack sufficient payload and range to be sufficient.
  • The US military's priority Indo-Pacific theater requires a fast, low-observable, and maneuverable platform that can carry advanced sensors and stand-off weaponry over great distances through potentially contested airspace.
  • The US is actively developing new semi-autonomous and artificial intelligence-driven aircraft, from pilotless F-16s to collaborative combat aircraft.
  • Some former pilots and warfighting analysts recommend combining drones and crewed fighter aircraft to create the most effective and efficient tactics.
  • The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is not only a US military aircraft but is also used by other countries for its many capabilities. There are still advantages to human pilots such as their flexibility and decision-making abilities.
  • For the US military, having a combination of crewed and uncrewed systems enhances national security and is the best approach for improving airpower capabilities.
  • As of now, drones cannot replace top-dollar weapons like the F-35. Existing remotely controlled systems only meet some demands, are expensive, and vulnerable to electronic warfare and surface-to-air threats.
  • Although drones are changing war in unforeseen ways, experts suggest replacement might not be necessary, and a mix of both crewed and uncrewed systems is still needed.
  • The fight is not crewed or uncrewed. It is figuring out how to integrate and combine both that brings the biggest leap ahead in warfighting capabilities and capacity. This combination is the secret to success.
