European Union Opens Child Safety Probe Into Meta

  • Meta Platforms is facing an official child safety investigation by European authorities for possible violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA), linked to the protection of children.
  • This comes after a preliminary analysis of risk assessment report sent by Meta in September 2023 and the company's response to the Commission's formal requests as well as the Commission's own analysis.
  • The European Commission has stated that it is concerned about the age verification methods put in place by Meta and it also thinks that Facebook and Instagram's systems and algorithms may stimulate behavioural addictions in children and create so-called 'rabbit-hole effects'.
  • The investigation will focus on three areas: Meta's compliance with DSA obligations on assessment and mitigation of risks caused by the design; Meta’s compliance with DSA on age verification tools; and, Meta’s compliance with DSA obligations to put in place appropriate and proportionate measures to ensure a high level of privacy, safety, and security for minors.
  • Meta is not alone; last February, the European Commission had opened a formal probe into whether TikTok broke Digital Services Act rules related to the protection of minors.
  • Social media is a concern for regulators globally and comes amid a number of whistleblowers from social media companies who have publicly expressed concern over the impact of the platforms on children's mental health.
  • Last November, speaking before American lawmakers, Meta called for federal law for App Stores to approve app downloads for under-16s, and the US Senate had begun to investigate Meta's actions to protect children.
  • The European Commission will now carry out an in-depth investigation as a matter of priority and will gather evidence by sending additional requests for information, conducting interviews, or inspections.
  • Since 17 February, the Digital Services Act applies to all online intermediaries in the EU.
  • Meta's compliance with the DSA obligations to mitigate the risks of negative effects to young Europeans' physical and mental health on its platforms Facebook and Instagram will be reviewed.

What happens when you restrict someone on Instagram? Explained

  • Instagram introduced the Restrict feature to prevent cyberbullying and promote a more welcoming community. Restricting someone prevents them from communicating with you in your inbox and comment section. The user will continue to view and comment on your posts and will never know they are restricted by you.
  • When you restrict someone, their comments on your posts will be hidden from public view. You’ll still see their comments, but they won’t be visible to anyone else. Restricted users can still send you direct messages, but you’ll have more control over how you respond to them. Additionally, the restrict feature limits the interaction, which means the restricted user can’t see your activity status, but they can visit your profile and go through your following and followers list.
  • There are three ways to restrict someone on Instagram, but you can’t perform the steps on the PC or web version of Instagram. You can restrict someone through messages on Instagram, through comments, or directly from the user's account.
  • Blocking and Restriction features are quite different. When you block someone on Instagram, it makes your Instagram profile inaccessible to them. They won't be able to access your posts, stories, or profile information.
  • If you want to see if a restricted user has dropped messages, you need to tap the messenger icon on the Instagram home page and then move to the Requests section.
  • Unrestricting someone on Instagram is easy. To unrestrict an account, go to your Instagram profile, tap the hamburger menu at the top right corner, and select Restricted. Here, you will see your restricted account list on Instagram. Tap Unrestrict beside the user's name.
  • Restricting someone on Instagram offers a more strategic approach to managing your online interactions. By limiting someone’s ability to interact with you and your content, you can maintain a connection while still having control over your Instagram experience.
