- Audiences are favoring authentic and knowledgeable content creators over follower count, leading to the rise of intellectual influencers or thought leaders, who will dominate social media feeds. A survey by Bazaarvoice indicated that influencers with millions of followers no longer resonate as they used to, and audiences are looking for relatable personalities, followed by expert personalities and just-for-fun personalities. Consumers want to hear from creators with knowledge and expertise. The thought leaders must diversify by starting up email lists, such as Substack and tending to their communities on platforms like Circle or Discord to stay relevant and build a true business around their influencing.
- Influencers who want to stay relevant and keep up with the industry need to move toward professionalization and specialization, focusing on the content that will be dominating feeds. The intellectual influencers who would thrive are those who offer content with more meaning and substance and become known as experts in their niche. The content creators who will succeed must stay authentic, vulnerable, and provide more educational and informative content that can offer a meaningful impact on their viewers.
- People are looking for edutainment and turning their backs on creators who solely promote products or go on out-of-touch lavish trips, the rise of intellectual influencers could outlast all the rest. Audiences want to engage with content that makes them feel something and are more selective in their choices as the barrier to entry for creators is so low. They want to see influencers and creators as three-dimensional people, not just trying to sell them things.
- The influencer industry is growing up, and it’s essential to build a real business around influencing. Diversification is crucial; however, a perfectly curated feed is still essential if the influencer has a passion for it. Creativity with a unique point of view is now incredibly important. In a ChatGPT world, audiences want to know that content creators have something in common with them and are looking for vulnerabilities and humanness more than ever.
- With the uncertain future of TikTok and the unrest at YouTube, influencers face an uncertain future. Audiences will still watch quick dopamine-hit content that doesn't require too much brainpower, as well as videos that make them think deeper about a topic. However, the latter is in a much less crowded field, leaving room for the intellectual influencers to thrive.
- Though the future is uncertain, content creation is still relevant and will continue to be so even in the coming years. As some platforms disappear and others surface, it is essential for content creators to stay relevant, build a true business around their influencing, and be seen as thought leaders. This will be the kind of content that dominates feeds.
