AI-171 Crash: US Aviation Body FAA Rules Out Further Action on Boeing 787 Fuel Switch Locks

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has concluded that no further action is needed regarding Boeing 787 fuel switch locks, following the Air India crash of flight AI171 on June 12.
The preliminary investigation report revealed that the fuel supply to the engines of the Boeing 787-8 was cut off, resulting in the engines shutting down after take-off, leading to the fatal crash that claimed at least 275 lives.
The FAA's notice to international counterparts stated that the fuel control switch design in Boeing planes is safe and does not warrant the issuance of an Airworthiness Directive at this time, despite a 2018 bulletin warning of potential issues with the fuel control switches.
The investigation highlighted that maintenance inspections advised in the bulletin were not carried out by Air India as they were considered advisory and not mandatory. The scrutiny of maintenance records showed that the throttle control module was replaced twice, but no defects related to the fuel control switch were reported since 2023 on the aircraft.
