What Is A Plug-In Hybrid And How Exactly Does It Work?

  • Plug-in hybrids, or PHEVs, typically have a gas engine and one or more electric motors with a battery pack that needs charging.
  • They offer a modest all-electric range, which means no fuel-ups for many drivers.
  • Plug-in hybrids’ electric-only range can be a significant benefit for drivers with short commutes.
  • Though they offer an electric range, which can significantly improve fuel economy, PHEVs aren’t the best choice for every driver.
  • Owners who don’t remember to charge can get worse fuel economy, as the gas engine has to tote around a heavy battery and electric motors.
  • PHEVs can also qualify for federal tax credits of up to $7,500, which can significantly reduce the initial purchase price.
  • No matter what you hear, PHEVs are not the end-all, be-all solution and are not completely irrelevant.
  • PHEVs have doubled in sales since 2019, and forecasts predict continued growth through the end of the decade.
  • Despite a higher initial purchase price than gas or hybrid vehicles, PHEVs’ electric range will continue to offer significant benefits for people living in states with higher-than-average gas prices.
  • Most will last as long as anyone plans to keep their vehicle. Additionally, automakers offer at least eight years or 100,000 miles of warranty coverage for the electric drive components, including the battery.

Polestar 5: Everything We Know

  • The Polestar 5 is a performance-oriented electric vehicle set to be released soon by electric vehicle (EV) brand Polestar, created as a spinoff from Volvo Cars.
  • It is a four-door fastback sports sedan that debuted as the Polestar Precept concept at the 2020 Geneva Auto Show, with production confirmed by Polestar in 2022.
  • The Polestar 5 features a sleek, smooth, and seemingly highly aerodynamic surface with a long and low-slung appearance and no rear window. The cabin is bright due to a full-length glass roof.
  • The interior configuration of Polestar 5 is still a mystery with no official words.
  • Polestar 5 prototypes have appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the last two years. They feature all-wheel drive and a dual-motor electric powertrain that produces a combined output of 871 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, providing a targeted range of 372 miles.
  • Polestar announced working on a 103-kWh battery to pair with its 650-kW dual-motor powertrain. The electric vehicle can reach an 80-percent state of charge within 20 minutes via an 800-volt architecture. A recent demonstration showcased a faster charging time of 10 minutes using a smaller 77-kWh battery pack.
  • The base Polestar 5 should easily achieve 300 miles of range on a full charge, but final numbers won't be available until the official launch.
  • The model is projected to cost around $100,000 and will take after its expected competitors, including the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S, in terms of pricing and performance.
  • The Polestar 5 is expected to debut as a 2026 model and launch sometime next year.

2024 Toyota bZ4X EPA Range And Energy Consumption: How Does It Compare To Tesla Model Y?

  • Toyota bZ4X range and energy consumption ratings were recently listed by EPA on its website.
  • The car's front-wheel-drive version, with a 71.4-kWh battery, can go up to 252 miles, while the all-wheel-drive version, with a 72.8-kWh battery, can go up to 228 miles.
  • The range number values are not very competitive compared to rivals, considering many of them offer up to around 300 miles.
  • The energy consumption of the Toyota bZ4X is estimated at 3.5 miles/kWh for the efficient 18-inch-wheel front-wheel-drive version.
  • The top-of-the-line Toyota bZ4X Limited AWD 20-in with 20-inch wheels is rated at 3.0 miles/kWh.
  • The energy consumption is 12.5% higher for the Toyota bZ4X AWD with 18-inch-wheels compared to Elon Musk's 2024 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD 19-in.
  • The Toyota bZ4X is priced similarly to the 300-mile-range Tesla Model Y, but without a tax credit benefit that could be game-changing for Toyota.
  • Toyota will have to compete with Tesla’s extended-range Model Y and the Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV.
  • Toyota might need to improve the battery capacity and efficiency of their models to be competitive in the electric vehicle market.
  • It remains unclear whether Toyota can improve the range, or whether it will even pursue this, since the problem could be rather about battery price and supply.
