Nissan Leaf: The Used Buyer's Guide

  • Nissan’s kept updating the Leaf, and the brand has clung doggedly to its main virtue against the competition: affordability.
  • If you’re in the market for a used Nissan Leaf, here are the questions you must ask (and potential pitfalls to avoid).
  • The main distinction between Nissan Leafs is generational. The first-gen Nissan Leaf (2011-17) was a pioneer.
  • Second-gen Leafs tend to be priced higher, between $10,000 and $20,000, depending on the age, usage and whether it was a Plus model.
  • Almost every used Nissan Leaf should be beneath the $25,000 threshold for the used EV tax credit.
  • All lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time. That can be a particular concern for first-gen Nissan Leafs.
  • A 2019 Leaf outperformed several competitors, maintaining its range in cold weather.
  • Nissan typically sold Leafs with a three-year or 36,000-mile comprehensive warranty, a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty and (on battery packs larger than the 24 kWh pack) an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty.
  • The warranty only covers repairs to bring the battery back up to 9/12 bars.
  • For Level 2 home charging, first-gen models came with a base 3.6 kW capacity and an optional upgrade to 6.6 kW.

Go Eve earns European CE Mark for DockChain EV charging system

  • Irish/UK technology company Go Eve has obtained European CE Mark certification for its DockChain EV charging technology.
  • DockChain enables multiple vehicles to connect to a single fast charger through a daisy chain of compact charging points. Each vehicle on a chain charges one at a time, at full power.
  • The DockChain charger offers power ratings between 150 and 400 A, enabling charging speeds of up to 320 kW for compatible vehicles. DockChain’s software manages charging sessions based on customizable criteria such as which vehicle arrived first, battery level prioritization, priority parking bays and energy pricing or tariff optimization.
  • The system is suited for fleet and site operators that need to integrate EV charging into existing parking setups. The modular design allows the system to scale as EV adoption grows, while the source fast charger can be located away from the parking area, saving space and reducing wear and tear. Software alerts the driver or operator when any EV on the system is scheduled to finish charging.

Tested: The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N 70 MPH Highway Range Test

  • The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has an EPA combined range rating of 221 miles.
  • However, it completed its InsideEVs 70 mph highway range test having driven 230 miles, nine miles more than its combined EPA range rating.
  • The Ioniq 5 N's highway rating is 202 miles, so the expectation was to finish up somewhere between that and its combined EPA range rating.
  • The vehicle completed 70 mph until the end, and it could have run 226 or 227 miles without shutting down.
  • The Ioniq 5 N has 568 lb-ft of torque with its "N Grin Boost" feature activated.
  • It features a combined power output of 601 hp, which increases to 641 hp with its "N Grin Boost" feature.
  • Hyundai incorporated artificial gears and exhaust noise into the Ioniq 5 N, which worked favorably.
  • The vehicle features Pirelli P-Zero tires which account for some of the range loss.
  • To test energy consumption, the vehicle was charged to 100% and set to its most efficient driving mode.
  • The test drive showed that the HVAC unit doesn't reduce the vehicle's range while driving at 70 mph.

Tesla's Head Designer Hints Robotaxi Could Get Additional Form Factors

  • Tesla's Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen showcased the Cybercab, an autonomous taxi with two seats.
  • During the presentation at the Petersen Automotive Museum, he mentioned that Tesla had 'future vehicles coming' that could 'take multiple passengers'.
  • This, combined with previous comments from Tesla's Head of Investor Relations Travis Axelrod, has led to speculation that Tesla may have additional robotaxi form factors up its sleeve.
  • Investors are excited about Tesla's Robotaxi ambitions, and the company's promised commercial autonomy platform that begins with the Cybercab.
  • It is not clear what other robotaxi designs Telsa has in development, but apparently the company sees the need for additional models across its fleet.
  • Tesla has planned to launch the Tesla Network, an autonomous ride-sharing app that utilizes customer-owned Teslas to provide ride-sharing.
  • One of the biggest hurdles for Tesla in launching Tesla Network comes from providing a hardware level necessary for Level 5 fully automated driving.
  • Tesla will have to either push existing models with new FSD hardware or consider manufacturing new dedicated vehicles.
  • Franz von Holzhausen's comments hint at Tesla's bigger picture. Tesla maximizes its offerings to meet the idea that it is an AI company that just happens to build cars
  • For now, the Cybercab and Robovan are the only two robotaxi platforms that Tesla has officially previewed to the world.
