- China is known for its lavish EV industry subsidies and years of internal competition and research and development, making it hard to match China’s battery cost.
- Biden has made it a priority to disentangle the US from supply chains in China, such as beefing up the tariffs on Chinese batteries and minerals, and has changed the $7,500 tax credit.
- It’s not immediately clear if any other US-made EVs would be vulnerable to battery tariffs like the Model 3 RWD is.
- Experts say battery taxes and mineral tariffs may be more consequential to prices of EV buyers in the US in the short term and make the advisable to rely less on Chinese content in the building of EVs.
- The trade dispute may be more about shoring up the Democratic vote in manufacturing hubs like Michigan and Ohio than about Chinese cars.
- Tesla will need to look for a new battery supplier or deprioritise the entry-level Model 3 while consumers are unlikely to feel the pain of the higher costs.
- Jay Turner, a professor of environmental studies, suggested that it is safe to say no EV anywhere in the world is independent from China's materials and manufacturing processes.
