'It’s A Desperate Move': Ex-Nissan Boss Carlos Ghosn On Honda Merger

  • Former Nissan-Renault boss Carlos Ghosn has spoken out about reports that Nissan is in talks with Honda regarding a potential merger. Ghosn, who was instrumental in creating the Renault-Nissan alliance that helped rescue the Japanese company from bankruptcy, said there was “no industrial logic” to a potential merger between the two companies.
  • Ghosn pointed out that the two companies have similar brands and operate in the same markets, making it difficult to see how the deal could be beneficial for either firm. Ghosn said that Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry may have been behind the proposed merger, as it looks to find a solution that could help secure the short-term future of Nissan while also fitting in with the longer-term ambitions of Honda.
  • Nissan is said to be in need of investment and expertise in the area of batteries and software if it is to keep pace with new automotive players emerging from China. Ghosn said that the “synergies” between Honda and Nissan would be difficult to find.
  • Tesla has issued an over-the-air recall for 700,000 of its vehicles. The recall is related to an issue with the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and includes certain Model 3s, Model Ys and Cybertrucks. The TPMS warning light on some vehicles may not illuminate between drive cycles, which could cause drivers to be unaware of low tire pressure.
  • Elon Musk and the city of Austin are said to be in communication about the potential deployment of Tesla’s new Cybercabs in Texas. Tesla is reportedly working with the city to establish safety expectations. A Tesla employee said that Austin is on the company’s “roadmap” for deploying the driverless fleets but a decision has not been made. The requisite approvals could take years to obtain.
  • There are questions of regulatory compliance to be addressed, as Tesla has not yet been listed as a licensee in Texas. If Tesla does deploy its self-driving taxis in Austin, it will be in the company of competitors, such as Google’s Waymo, which has deployed its autonomous vehicles in the Texas capital city.
  • As autonomous vehicles become more common, some cities are looking to set their own guidelines for testing and deployment. Others are actively courting self-driving car companies, offering them relaxed regulations and access to public space.
  • Tesla has bet its future on autonomous technology. Competition in this space is intense, with established players, such as Google and General Motors, jostling for prominence alongside smaller start-ups such as Aurora and Zoox.
  • According to Bloomberg, Tesla is said to have been in talks with Austin on this issue since May. A company email acquired by Bloomberg suggests that Tesla is still to decide which city within Texas its driverless car fleet will debut.
  • Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin and Phoenix already have autonomous vehicle fleets operating on their streets.

Rivian executives accused of harassment in previously unreported lawsuits

  • Automaker Rivian and its top executives are involved in multiple harassment lawsuits by employees who cited inaction by leadership in handling their complaints.
  • Four Rivian workers filed lawsuits over harassment and discrimination and three similar cases have been settled under confidentiality agreements.
  • Two cases filed in Orange County court by former employees center around chief designer Jeff Hammoud, who allegedly created a hostile work environment.
  • One lawsuit alleges Hammoud erratically directed anger towards women in leadership, while the other claims he labeled an employee’s wife “a hooker” and failed to face consequences.
  • A third case, filed by line worker Jeremiah Powe in federal court, alleges former COO Frank Klein of assault and battery, following dress code violations.
  • One of the harassment cases is currently being settled by production worker Nicole Hawkins, who claims she was physically harassed and threatened by a co-worker at the carmaker's Illinois factory.
  • Laura Schwab, who was previously Rivian's head of sales and marketing, sued the firm over allegations of sexual discrimination and wrongful termination in 2021.
  • Schwab's lawsuit was settled with Rivian six months later, while Natasha Hill and Angela Betancourt brought legal action against the carmaker and subsequently reached undisclosed settlements.
  • A Rivian representative said the company was committed to providing an outstanding workplace that is free of harassment, discrimination and retaliation.
  • Rivian's lawsuit settlement following previous harassment accusations seems to indicate inadequate improvements in their corporate culture, according to one of the workers’ lawyer.
