FCL Components introduces switching relay for automotive

  • Netherlands-based FCL Components has introduced the FTR-E1-HC, a lightweight higher-voltage switching relay for automotive and power applications.
  • The FTR-E1-HC eliminates the need for a holding voltage coil drive circuit, reducing costs and space requirements.
  • It offers twice the insulation properties of similar relays, providing a dielectric strength of 5,000 VAC between coil and contacts, and 2,500 VAC between contacts.
  • The FTR-E1-HC is suitable for various applications including EVs, fast charging stations, photovoltaic power generation systems, hybrid construction machinery, and battery systems.

Ford Pleads To Suppliers: ‘Help Us Make EVs Affordable’

  • Ford has asked its suppliers for ideas to help reduce the production costs associated with its electric vehicles (EVs), as the automaker is projected to lose $5.5bn from its Model e EV unit this year. The company has issued a “call to action,” asking suppliers for cost-reduction proposals for existing EVs including the F-150 Lightning pickup, next-gen P800 electric pickup, Mustang Mach E, E-Transit van and large electric SUV.
  • Ford suggested suppliers reduce costs across “commercial, design, content, footprint and value chain.” Calling on the suppliers to develop “incremental cost-reduction proposals,” the automaker said, “We need your best ideas to drive cost reduction.”
  • General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solutions will provide a $150m relief fund to consumers impacted by fires caused by defective batteries in its Chevy Bolt EV. This will resolve a class-action lawsuit against GM filed by owners for the trouble defective batteries caused.
  • Tesla could use data learnt from Chinese roads and driving patterns to train its self-driving cars, according to reports. Recently Tesla signed a mapping and navigation agreement with Chinese tech giant Baidu, and has now complied with Chinese regulators on how it will handle data security and privacy. Local data processing centers could also be considered as Tesla tries to make progress with autonomous driving technology.
  • Several affordable Ford models, including a $25,000 truck and compact SUV powered by low-cost LFP batteries are under development. The automaker has, however, asked its suppliers for ideas that go beyond just products, but also considered “commercial, design, content, footprint and value chain.”
  • Ford is calling it a “call to action” to all suppliers to help make its electric vehicle lineup more affordable and competitive with its competitors.
  • The request comes after Ford announced likely losses of up to $5.5bn in 2024, which is thought to be largely due to the higher cost of producing EVs compared to standard petrol vehicles.
  • As we’ve previously noted, it’s typically only Tesla and Chinese EV-makers like BYD and Li Auto that are profitable today as they haven’t had to revamp a standard car business on top of developing EVs.
  • It’s thought that Ford's losses relate in part to producing EVs due to the weight of development.
  • Investing in EVs requires extremely high capital, and until they reach a mass production stage the return on that investment is low.

Polestar Depends On China For Now. It Wants 'More Clarity' On What EV Tariffs Mean

  • President Joe Biden’s announcement of new 100% tariffs that target potential Chinese EV imports and battery production has made ripples internationally.
  • Polestar finds itself in a position where it may have to pay tariffs which could potentially make some of its cars uncompetitive.
  • All the Polestar 2 models are made in China, meaning it is now subject to an import tariff that is now four times as high as it was before.
  • Both the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 use batteries made by Chinese battery provider CATL. Import tariffs on those batteries went from 7.5% to 25%, potentially adding thousands of dollars to the vehicle’s build cost.
  • Geely owns 72% of Polestar. Given that Geely’s toolbox means that Polestar would be pulling more from China-made and China-designed assets, how exactly would Polestar outmaneuver the ire of the tariffs that could come with using more Geely parts? It’s not at all clear, there are no perfect clean solutions yet.
  • The brand's entry-level model Polestar 2 is now shaping up to be a catastrophic money loser.
  • Polestar officials remain optimistic, even if they're not happy about the Biden Administration’s decision.
  • However, things aren't clear for anyone right now, and the entire auto industry is caught off guard by the tariff announcement.
  • While the Polestar 3 enters production, it will be built in South Carolina, so it won't feel those effects.
  • Polestar's continued access to the Geely toolbox would be an asset for the company.
