Electric Car Charger Vandalism Continues To Surge Nationwide

  • Vandalism against electric car charging stations continues to surge nationwide. Since the beginning of this year, hundreds of Level 2 (L2) and DC fast charging stalls across America have been vandalized, and in many cases copper material from cable wiring has been stolen which is then sold to recyclers for pennies on the dollar.
  • Thieves stealing copper materials cause damage that oftentimes costs charging operators thousands to source and install new charging cords. Recently, in Houston, Texas, 5 separate Tesla Supercharging locations were stripped, while in Fresno, California, over 50 of the city’s 88 electric vehicle charging stations have been pillaged.
  • Tesla has been quick to jump on the situation and notify drivers to avoid the vandalized charging stations as repairs get underway. Unfortunately, it’s not just Tesla Superchargers that are being targeted but new installations from Puget Sound Energy in Sumner, Washington, have been hit twice since being installed at the start of this year.
  • In the past few days, a Tesla supercharging station in the Bay Area was targeted by vandals who severed the charging cord from every stall. It’s not just about financial costs, the damage causes major headaches for EV drivers simply trying to get to their next destination.
  • Wire theft has been an issue for decades of which electric vehicle chargers are just the latest target. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, wire theft has recently cost taxpayers $1.5 million just since last year on public property alone, and the city of Minneapolis has reported 2023 to be the single most challenging year for combating wire theft.
  • One of the main reasons electric vehicle stations are targeted is due to their locations. Chargers are often installed in areas with convenient public access, such as shopping centers, college campuses, big box retailers, drug stores, fast food restaurants, and public parks.
  • The City of Fresno is taking a drastic response to the rampant vandalism in its city, installing new custom cabinets around each vandalized unit and locking them in off-peak hours. Pasadena, California, has prohibited charging station installations in all residential locations.
  • Having more chargers installed along major traffic arteries such as highways might make them less vulnerable, and it would also help considerably if more units were installed under well-lit canopies such as gas stations with 24-hour attendants.
  • Electric vehicle vandalism incidents reported worldwide continue to rise as vehicle and infrastructure adoption grows. Criminal activities by anti-EV factions looking to make life miserable for others are also happening globally.
  • With increased security, lighting, and cameras at public charging sites, it’s hoped more criminals like this will be brought to justice. If you have been impacted by charging infrastructure vandalism or noticed an increased frequency of these incidents in the past year, let us know your experience below.
