Google’s new quantum chip is 1.05 million septillion times faster than today’s fastest supercomputers

  • Google has developed a quantum chip that incorporates 105 qubits capable of performing tasks in under five minutes that would take today’s fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years – equivalent to over one million septillion times faster.
  • The Willow chip is designed for quantum error correction and is capable of extending into a 7x7 grid while still halving the error rate with each expansion. The system also outlives and corrects physical qubit errors, which allows the technology to integrate a high degree of error correction.
  • The chip successfully completed a test of quantum systems’ random circuit sampling (RCS) benchmark, assessing whether a quantum computer can perform tasks impossible for classical systems.
  • The implications for quantum computing are significant, bringing the dream of running large scale algorithms closer to commercial application. This offers new frontiers for both science and industry.
  • The next milestone is to achieve beyond classical computer computation relevant to real-world applications, where quantum systems have strong potential in drug discovery, material science, energy, climate change mitigation, artificial intelligence and more.
  • The Willow chip is a promising foundation for further research and development in the quantum computing field. The development of software and educational resources have been made available for open-source exploration of this evolving field.
  • The chip incorporates 105 qubits of the highest quality performance across key benchmarks including quantum error correction and random circuit sampling.
  • Researchers and developers are invited to explore the Willow chip and quantum computing field boldly to contribute to the drive toward transformative applications in quantum computing.
  • Quantum computing's potential spans various domains including drug discovery, material science, and energy. By improving memory, computational costs could drop significantly.
  • Quantum computing's ability to solve complex problems could amplify the potential of AI by accessing quantum algorithms that optimise learning architectures and model quantum effects that could create efficient resource allocation and climate change solutions.

Australia To ‘Charge’ Tech Firms For News Content, After Meta Ends Licensing Deal

  • The Australian government plans to introduce a levy on social media firms and search engines to force them to pay publishers for journalism and news content.
  • This comes after Facebook parent Meta Platforms ended its licensing deal with the Australian government.
  • Australia passed the Media Bargaining Law in February 2021 to set fees that tech companies have to pay media outlets for sharing news links.
  • The proposed amendments would require social media platforms and search engines earning more than $250m in revenues from Australia to pay a 'charge', which can be offset against payments to publishers.

I tried out Android XR, Google’s latest attempt to take on Meta and Apple

  • Google has introduced Android XR, their latest attempt at extended reality (XR) technology.
  • The operating system incorporates Gemini AI, which helps the new OS reach a higher range of use cases for the company.
  • Samsung's Project Moohan VR headset is a direct competitor to the Apple Vision Pro VR headset and has impressed users with its sharp and clear images.
  • One of the highlights of Android XR system is the ability to effectively spatialize flat footage and generate depth perception for the viewers.
  • Android XR is designed to adapt to the UI and functionality of the hardware's capability to provide the appropriate interface to users. It offloads processing workloads to a connected smartphone which carries out the processing and streams the pixels to the glasses for viewing.
  • The Gemini AI is the most interesting aspect of the Android XR software platform which has eye tracking that can be controlled through calibration and supports ARCore and AR search natively.
  • The multimodal control, consisting of hand movements, a physical desk equipped with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and voice command control, allows for a diverse range of controls.
  • Lastly, Android XR represents a renewed commitment by Google to create a new operating system that can drive headsets, glasses, and other XR form factors going forward.
  • Google has had its fair shot at VR, but Android XR represents a unique vision that can possibly rival competitors like Apple and Meta in the XR market.
  • With Meta already announcing its plans to open up its Horizon OS ecosystem, the year 2022 could see a flurry of activity in the XR headset market.

Google wants to sell those Project Astra AR glasses some day, but it won’t be today

  • Google plans to release its prototype glasses, armed with AI and AR capabilities, to a small set of selected users for real-world testing. The Project Astra prototype glasses would run on Android XR, Google’s new operating system for vision-based computing. Google wants glasses to be the “next generation of computing”. Google still has nothing concrete to share about the actual product or when it will be released. Google also shared a new demo showing how its prototype glasses can use Project Astra and AR technology. Google has an edge with Project Astra which it is launching as an app to a few beta testers soon. Using Project Astra on your phone is impressive, and it’s likely a signal of what’s coming for AI apps.
  • The Google’s prototype glasses is essentially vaporware and it seems Google has no clear timeline for a consumer launch of this prototype. It is now starting to let hardware makers and developers build different kinds of glasses, headsets, and experiences around Android XR. Project Astra works by streaming pictures of your surroundings, one frame per second, into an AI model for real-time processing. While that’s happening, it also processes your voice as you speak. Some members of Google DeepMind also showed how Astra could read your phone screen. OpenAI has also demoed GPT-4o’s vision capabilities, which are similar to Project Astra and also have been teased to release soon. It might take them a while to make that a reality.

Introducing Android XR SDK Developer Preview

  • Google has released Android's extended reality developer kit, the Android XR SDK. Using familiar Android APIs and tools, it enables developers to create augmented and virtual reality apps for headsets and glasses. Most Android apps will be automatically offered up in an extended reality format on the Play Store, which is also to be introduced shortly. The XR SDK is built on existing app development foundations and already familiar libraries, including Jetpack Compose, Material Design for XR, and ARCore for Jetpack XR.
  • As well as being able to put users inside immersive virtual worlds or bring AR capabilities to native apps, the XR SDK also offers features such as natural, multimodal interaction and spatialised 3D panels and audio. New tools include browser support from Chrome for Android XR's Web XR standard, while native languages C/C++ support OpenXR 1.1.
  • Google has also partnered with Unity to natively integrate their real-time 3D engine with Android XR starting with Unity 6, adding Android XR support to packages such as OpenXR, AR Foundation, XR Interaction Toolkit, XR Hands, and XR Composition Layers. Chrome on Android XR also supports WebXR features including depth maps allowing virtual objects to interact with real-world surfaces.
  • The XR SDK, which is oriented around open standards and formats such as glTF 2.0 for 3D models and OpenEXR for HDR environments, is available now via developer.android.com/develop/xr.
  • Android developers can also get access to prerelease hardware by filling out a form to participate in an Android XR Developer Bootcamp.
