Everyone's talking about AI, but marketers shouldn't overlook other emerging tech innovations like 5G and robotics

  • The rise of generative AI is a watershed moment for marketers, transforming the landscape for creative expression.
  • In fact, there are two dozen digital technologies disrupting the industry at this very moment, including augmented and virtual reality, 5G, robotics, and wearable devices.
  • To survive in this new paradigm, marketers must be open-minded —acting swiftly and smartly to embrace, test and prove the value of these technologies, all while safeguarding consumers' privacy and data.
  • The confluence of these technologies will have a profound impact on marketing, influencing every facet of a brand's relationship with consumers.
  • Achieving this balance creates the best of both worlds and ensures that marketers — not robots — are the ones driving the industry forward.
  • Embracing a culture of continuous learning is paramount to ensuring a brand's resilience in the future, yet traditional budgets are predominantly focused on delivering performance and results in the short term.
  • It's important to remember that, at the leading edge of marketing, traditional key performance indicators alone may not be a good gauge of success.
  • This underscores the critical role CMOs play in responsibly reshaping our approach to collecting, securing and utilizing the data consumers share with us.
  • By embracing change, handling data responsibly and investing in innovation, brand leaders can make emerging tech their stepping stones — not stumbling blocks — as they push the industry forward.
  • Raja Rajamannar is the chief marketing and communications officer and president of healthcare, at Mastercard

Cutting-edge new solar panels are 1000x more powerful than traditional panels

  • Researchers at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) have discovered a new method to increase the efficiency of solar cells by a factor of 1,000.
  • The team of scientists achieved this breakthrough by creating crystalline layers of barium titanate, strontium titanate, and calcium titanate.
  • Their findings, which could revolutionize the solar energy industry, were recently published in the journal Science Advances.
  • Solar cells currently in use are mostly silicon-based, but their efficiency is limited. This has led researchers to explore new materials, such as ferroelectrics like barium titanate.
  • Ferroelectric materials have spatially separated positive and negative charges, which leads to an asymmetric structure that generates electricity from light.
  • The MLU research team's discovery has already caught the attention of industry leaders.
  • This new development has far-reaching implications for the solar industry.
  • Solar energy is one of the fastest-growing sources of renewable energy, and the demand for solar panels is expected to increase dramatically in the coming years.
  • The next step for the MLU research team is to further investigate the properties of the new material and optimize its performance.
  • The MLU research team's findings have also generated interest among investors and entrepreneurs.

Adventures #75 — Into the unknown, again

  • The startup canon isn't easy, and hurricane Pivot has proven a tough one. First it had us give up on what we had done, then it pulled us up and threw us in uncharted territory, back to square one.
  • When in uncharted territory, four brains with a lot of computing power yet little structure tend to end up in the Rapids of terrible ideas and then in the Storm of despair.
  • In the last couple weeks we grew exponentially in terms of team solidity and synchrony, and now, trying to converge towards laser-focused clarity, the clouds seem to be leaving the horizon.
  • Building a startup is more craft than science, there’s no single deterministic methodology, no well-defined and clear path.
  • They still don’t have a product but have had to pivot a number of times already.
  • They’re struggling with trying to figure out what market they want to tackle and what problem they want to solve, again.
  • If the expedition can weather these shake-ups, learn from mistakes and stick together the exploration bears fruit.
  • The team is refining their craft step by step and trying to enjoy the amazing experience they’re living.
  • Although they have barely found a product, Flavio and his team are iterating and pivoting to try and make their climate tech startup a success.
  • Their investor was totally fine with pivoting, which surprised Flavio, who hasn’t yet internalized the “startup canon”.
