OpenAI is taking a page out of Big Tech's playbook by reportedly building its own chips

OpenAI is said to be teaming up with Broadcom and TSMC to create custom AI chips.
The move would place OpenAI alongside tech giants like Meta, Amazon, and Google who design and build their own chips.
OpenAI would gain greater control over its supply chain and benefit from the opportunity to create chips more suited to its needs.
By designing chips specifically for its models, the chips should offer more speed and greater energy efficiency.
However, although OpenAI has secured manufacturing capacity with TSMC, it has put plans to build its own network of chip factories on hold for now.
Custom chip design is typically an exclusive option for the biggest tech companies due to high upfront costs.
In designing its own chips, OpenAI will have access to benefits such as diversification of suppliers and lower costs.
OpenAI's move would reduce its dependency on market leader Nvidia for AI chips, and incorporate AMD into its supply mix.
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has been outspoken about the need to increase chip supply.
The company has deep pockets for the investment, raising $6.6bn from investors in early October 2021.

Meta’s Zuckerberg Touts AI Progress but Warns of ‘Serious Infrastructure’

Meta's Q3 earnings report saw record revenues of over $40.6bn, up 19% YoY with advertising-revenues at $39.9bn with ad impressions delivering 7% growth YoY compared to 21% YoY growth rates in the previous year worldwide.
Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg sees serious infrastructure requirements for AI and this infrastructure would demand significant investments but the company has not yet decided on a final budget.
The company has set its 2024 capex widening between $38bn to $40bn while its forward guidance of $45bn to $48bn for the fourth quarter sales suggests 12% to 19% growth YoY.
Meta's shares dropped 3% in after-hours trading on Wednesday presumably due to concerns around margin squeeze due to requisite infrastructure investment for AI.
Zuckerberg said that AI has a positive impact on the firm's work and rapid adoption of Meta AI and Llama, has been seen across the industry.
More than a million advertisers were using GenAI tools to create more than 15 million ads in the past month.
Meta AI has more than 500 million monthly active users and improvements to AI-driven feed and video recommendations have led to an 8% increase in time spent on Facebook and a 6% increase on Instagram this year.
Revenues of Meta's Reality Labs have risen to $270mn compared to $210mn YoY but there was an increase in operating loss of $4.4bn as company continues to invest in VR and AR efforts.
Meta's Ray-Ban glasses with Meta AI integration has been doing well and the demand continues to be very strong.
CFO Li said that they are using advanced models to monetize and enhance marketing performance to achieve meaningful ad performance gains apart from finding opportunities to achieve good traction on Instagram Reels with focus on promoting original content.

Meta’s stock heads south on slow user growth and ongoing infrastructure investments

Meta Platforms Inc. reported lower-than-expected user numbers and an increase in data infrastructure spending in fiscal 2025.
Although the company’s earnings before certain costs beat an analyst's target of $5.25 per share, and revenue grew to $40.59 billion, above street consensus estimate of $40.29 billion.
Meta’s user growth was slower than expected, with just 3.29 billion daily active users across apps like Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, a 5% YoY increase but below the expected 3.31 billion.
Investors are worried that tech giants like Meta, Microsoft and Alphabet are investing too much in infrastructure spending without seeing any immediate returns on those investments.
Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg justified the infrastructure investments on building Meta’s data centers and creating world-class models and products.
Meta’s Reality Labs business, which houses its metaverse and virtual reality initiatives, posted an operating loss of $4.4bn in the quarter. This means that Reality Labs has now delivered a total operating loss of more than $58bn since it was founded in 2020.
Meta increased its capital expenditure guidance for fiscal 2024 to a range of $38bn to $40bn, citing the need to expand its data center infrastructure to support its ambitions in AI.
Meta said it’s now forecasting its total expenses for fiscal 2024 to come to between $96 billion and $98 billion, down from its previous guidance range of $96 billion to $99 billion.
Meta is investing in hardware to bolster its core advertising business, which was disrupted by Apple’s 2021 iOS privacy update. More than 1 million advertisers are now using its generative AI technology to improve targeting and generate more compelling ads.
Wall Street investors are concerned about Meta's scale of infrastructure investments, and the stock fell over 3% in the after-hours trading session.

Tanks have existed in the MMORPG genre and in RPGs for a long time. In this article, we look at the categories that tanks tend to fall into.
The armored tank isn’t just someone wearing armor but someone whose entire kit is based around reducing incoming damage as much as possible.
The point of a dodge or avoidance tank is that the best way to survive big hits is to not get hit in the first place.
Soak tank has huge health pool rendering it much harder to kill, but it requires a lot of healer attention.
Heal/drain tank has a normal amount of health for a tank or slightly more, but has a lot of tools to recover health on their own to make up for weaker defenses.
Stagger/barrier tank extends health by absorbing some damage and finding a way to turn that absorbed damage to your advantage.
A balance tank is a little bit of everything, able to do all of it on its own.
Specific-damage-type tank is really good at managing a very specific sort of damage type.
Gimmick tank covers situations when a character isn’t really a tank but can manage to tank in unusual circumstances.
Ranged tank deals with ranged enemies by operating just fine at range, allowing tanks who aren’t miffed if they need to step away from the personal space of whatever they’re tanking.
Control tank reduces the enemy’s ability to deal damage, make them less accurate, stun them, and is tons of fun in off-tanking situations.
