Massively Overthinking: How long should it take to level to endgame in MMORPGs?

  • New World players have been blasting through levels at an alarming rate. In just two days, some have gone from 0-44, with getting to level 65 taking only 15 hours.
  • For games like Lord of the Rings Online and other sandboxes, players should ideally take many months to hit max level as it’s the journey that counts.
  • For smaller-scale themeparks like New World, the ability for users to blitz through it doesn’t hurt the game.
  • Being able to speed up or slow down leveling at their leisure, something done in games such as LOTRO, would be great to implement more often.
  • MMOs let the journey take second place to endgames, devaluing the leveling, urging players to rush through zones and content.
  • MMOs need to make the journey, not the endgame, the real experience.
  • Instances like WoW Classic are preferred for providing a meaningful journey when compared to the zip-zip-now-you’re-80 retail edition.
  • There is a fine line between appreciated challenges and arbitrary slow leveling to extend it.
  • Different games call for different leveling models and there is no one size fits all solutions to leveling too quickly or too slow.
  • Non-traditional leveling models or systems where everything is relevant at all levels, such as in The Secret World or Elder Scrolls Online, allow for a faster leveling experience.

WoW Factor: Is World of Warcraft’s War Within the ‘come back’ expansion Blizzard wanted it to be?

  • World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, The War Within, has been generally well-received and kept player engagement high since its release in late Summer.
  • However, it is still too early to determine if the game has truly made a comeback as it remains to be seen if Blizzard will take risks with its future plans for the franchise.
  • While The War Within addressed many of WoW’s pain points and saw the inclusion of delves and other casual-friendly slots, some problems such as class balance and pay-to-win mounts remain.
  • Despite this, the MMO has seen high player engagement and new content with plenty for everyone including progression nerds, story people and fashionistas.
  • The game portrays a more achievable and sustainable growth in comparison to the previous expansions.
  • WoW’s future plans as announced in the Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct livestream could play a big role in long-term engagement.
  • The history and footprint of the MMORPG industry has made World of Warcraft change over the past two decades.
  • The War Within has done a good job of keeping WoW in the headlines for over four months, but it remains to be seen what the future holds for the franchise.
  • Players are keenly awaiting the future plans for the MMO, with hopes that the future expansion will give players more reasons to care about their characters.
  • Regardless, the idea of The War Within being a solid expansion that stabilized WoW’s downward trajectory has been achieved.

Hacker says they banned ‘thousands’ of Call of Duty gamers by abusing anti-cheat flaw

  • Activision's anti-cheat system flaw allowed hackers to ban 'thousands upon thousands' of Call of Duty players using hardcoded strings, according to the hacker who reported the bug.
  • A cheat developer called Zebleer introduced journalists to the hacker.
  • Hackers often exploit bugs in online video games to sell cheats that give players an unfair advantage, sometimes making millions.
  • Video game companies have been hiring cybersecurity specialists to develop and fine-tune anti-cheat systems separate from the games themselves.
  • In 2021, Activision released Ricochet, an anti-cheat system running at the kernel level.
  • The flaw exploited by the hacker's 'targeted abuse' relied on Ricochet's use of hardcoded strings as 'signatures' to detect hackers, regardless of context, leading to false positives.
  • Sending a message with a 'Trigger Bot' reference via the game's chat system would automatically result in the player's account being banned.
  • The hacker says they could have used the flaw for years without notice, but got tired of it and quit when they spotted authorities closing in.
  • Activision declined to comment on the matter.
  • The company's anti-cheat teams are now reportedly working on more advanced detection techniques, moving away from signature detection.
