Stock market today: Microsoft, Meta drag tech stocks lower on concerns over AI spending

  • Stocks tumbled sharply on Thursday, dragged down by tech. Microsoft and Meta stock dropped on renewed concerns over AI spending.
  • The tech sell-off was sparked by the latest earnings from mega-cap firms that mostly exceeded estimates but disappointed investors in other areas and exacerbated concerns about heavy investment in artificial intelligence.
  • The S&P 500 dropped almost 2% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 370 points.
  • Microsoft expects a slowdown in revenue due to investment in cloud computing for AI demand, while Meta plans to increase capital expenditures for AI. Jobless claims fell more than expected, and the Fed's preferred inflation gauge edged closer to 2%.

Review: Black Ops 6’s Horrible Maps Hinder Incredible Gameplay

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has top-tier gameplay, but it is greatly hindered by the general content and maps.
  • The omnimovement is single-handedly the best movement style in a Call of Duty game outside of the jetpack era.
  • Weapons are, fortunately, one area in which Treyarch still never misses, pairing well with the gunplay.
  • However, the issue lies with the maps, which are possibly the worst ever available with the launch of a title.
  • The different floors on the maps don't flow well together, with awkward bomb placements that impact the gameplay.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 doesn’t have a single map that competes with any of the greats from past years.
  • Zombies also fail to impress as Armor plates and the like don’t have a place in the mode.
  • The singleplayer campaign fares a bit better than other game modes with an engaging narrative and mission variety.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 could easily be the fourth-best game in the series if it had better content and maps.
  • The incredibly addictive Omnimovement system makes Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 enjoyable.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Is Breaking Records For Xbox When It Needs Them Most

  • Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is breaking records and giving Xbox a boost since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard last October.
  • Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, called Black Ops 6 the “biggest Call of Duty release ever”.
  • During its release, the game set the record for most players, hours played and total matches of any game in the series.
  • The game set a record for “Game Pass subscriber adds on launch day,” with sales up 60% on PlayStation and Steam from last year’s Modern Warfare 3.
  • It’s the first entry in the series that launched on a subscription service and was supported with cloud gaming.
  • Analysts are predicting the game’s launch could add another 4 million to the existing 34 million shared last February.
  • Microsoft is a black box when it comes to sales data, so there is no total player count or sales figure available.
  • Black Ops 6 has been garnering rave reviews following several middling to terrible entries.
  • For Microsoft, this is a much-needed win for Xbox, which has seen a tumultuous year with mass layoffs and closures of beloved studios.
  • Hardware sales continue to fall while game and service revenue continue to climb.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6, As Told By Steam Reviews

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a return to form for the series, as the first Call of Duty game to release on Game Pass following Microsoft’s purchase of Activision.
  • Black Ops 6’s return-to-basics approach was a welcome bit of news among the cacophony of showcases, directs, and overbearing blog posts about why this game would be the best Call of Duty ever.
  • Overall, Black Ops 6 seems to be earning its “Mixed” reception on Steam. It isn’t the greatest game, but it’s a perfectly fine and fun middling title, and that’s about all I need from it to have a great time.
  • Some are appreciating their time with the competitive multiplayer suite, but there are also repeated mentions of terrible maps and spawns throughout the reviews.
  • Folks who play Call of Duty tend to want refinements of core principles rather than drastic or convoluted reinventions.
  • Treyarch and Xbox clearly want us to think that Call of Duty is “back,” but is it really?
  • Fans seem to generally agree that the campaign here is better than average, and some are even calling it the best story mode in a COD game in years.
  • One of the biggest problems many seem to have with Black Ops 6 actually has little to do with the game itself and more to do with the packaging, specifically the launcher, Call of Duty HQ.
  • Zombies has enjoyed a more positive reception than multiplayer, but still there are players who are unhappy with the settings and crying out for more ambient (spookier) maps in the future.
  • The divisiveness surrounding the game is at least producing some good material in the Steam reviews page, though, so read it and weep.

Liv partners with Meta to capture mixed reality videos on Meta Quest

  • Liv has partnered with virtual reality (VR) company Meta to become the official capture solution for Meta Quest wireless VR headsets.
  • The partnership will bring Liv’s mixed reality capture and virtual camera solutions to developers publishing on Meta Quest as well as creators using those features in Meta Rift and Quest apps.
  • Developers are adding the capability for standalone headsets now and it should be available for consumers in the coming weeks in VR games.
  • The Liv technology for capturing videos originally only worked with wired VR headsets that connect to a PC, but has now been adapted to work with the Meta Quest standalone wireless headset.
  • Liv's technology enables VR players to take a virtual selfie, operate first-person and third-person cameras and perform real-time mixed reality capture with physical cameras.
  • As part of this partnership, Meta is deprecating its own mixed reality capture (MRC) tools and Liv will take over as the official solution.
  • Beyond 2024, Liv is looking to enhance the tooling for creators on the Liv App. However, streaming and simultaneous cameras are not available yet.
  • The beta release of Liv's new software development kit (Liv Creator Kit, or LCK) for Unity-based apps is available now.
  • Streaming will be the next focus for Liv. At that point, players will be able to upload and stream directly to Liv.
  • Liv will continue to support developers in their mission to reach as many creators, players and fans as possible in XR.

Casually Classic: Looking back at my 20+ year journey in World of Warcraft

  • In early 2003, Syp became aware of World of Warcraft, and from that moment, he was hooked- having taken interest in MMORPGs from afar, but hadn’t played any title that was accessible enough for him.
  • It took over a year before the launch of World of Warcraft, which resulted in Syp waiting patiently while filling up his time playing other games and scouring the internet and forums for any new details about the MMO.
  • Syp believes that Blizzard was masterful at feeding tantalizing tidbits about this game during that time. One feature in particular was the revolutionary quest system with objects in the world or dropped by mobs that would open up new missions.
  • The hype for the game was insane and everyone was talking about it, wanting in on the beta and speculation around the release date was a hot topic.
  • Syp's first year was a learning experience, where he found the game fairly casual with good quality-of-life features and mostly focused on high-end content.
  • By 2006, he had settled in with a Gnome Warlock named Syp, with whom he had great adventures on the road to 60, including engineering level up for the toys.
  • He missed out on the latter half of Wrath, almost all of Cataclysm and Pandaria by the time it was 2009, and felt like it was time to set WoW aside and focus on other MMOs like LOTRO and Warhammer Online, not to mention some of the promising titles that were coming from 2010 to 2012.
  • His return to WOW came on the tail end of Draenor in 2016, as he got pumped for Legion's launch that summer, which turned out to be the best of all times for him in that game.
  • In 2019, he also had a fun stint playing Classic Hardcore, exploring the early days of Season of Discovery, enjoying summer in Pandaria and soaking up several BlizzCon presentations and reveals.
  • In conclusion, Syp is enthusiastic about the future, saying, “More expansions, more fun, more memories, and a journey that hopefully spans my middle-aged years and into retirement! So happy 20th birthday, World of Warcraft — I appreciate the good times”.

Vague Patch Notes: Solipsism and what it means for playing MMORPGs

  • MMOs are defined by having other people around that you cannot control, which also leads to the solipsism problem where players treat the other people as mechanics to achieve their goals.
  • Solipsism refers to a belief that you are alone in being a conscious, thinking entity and everyone else is not, there are no other sentient human beings who have separate wants, desires, and thoughts.
  • When it comes to single-player games, solipsism is actually correct; you are the only person with actual agency in the game world. Everyone else is a digital simulacrum without any actual ability to make choices.
  • But the solipsism problem comes up when an MMO treats the other people around you not as people who are doing their own thing but as mechanics to achieve your goals.
  • World of Warcraft has a bad habit of doing so; the people in your party are your competition for things you want, not your allies or friends.
  • There are lots of ways that game design can subtly reinforce the idea that you are the person whose needs, wants, and desires are real, or at least the only ones that actually matter.
  • The reality is that if you are playing an MMORPG, your desires are not the sole thing that the game should revolve around.
  • The game should balance not only for yourself but for everyone else and if that means that your preferred playstyle gets weakened just a bit, then so be it.
  • My desires are not the sole thing that the game should revolve around, which means that sometimes I should find myself getting outclassed by others' picks but be thankful for it.
  • In MMORPGs, if you want to live completely separate from everyone, you aren't, since you are playing in a shared space with others, and treating them as if they are not real will lead to character failure.

Why Meta Might Create the Best Search Engine Ever

  • Mark Zuckerberg and his team are developing a search engine that uses the web to provide conversational answers about current events via the Meta AI chatbot.
  • This search engine will be accessible on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, and it will compete against Google Search, Perplexity AI, and OpenAI’s SearchGPT.
  • Meta will use content from Reuters to answer user questions about news and current events in real-time.
  • Meta AI already has 500 million users worldwide, and the search engine would be powered by Llama 4, set to be released by early next year with improved reasoning capabilities.
  • Meta’s search feature is driven by user activity on the platform, which informs the generation and ranking of search results.
  • Meta could potentially capture the advertising industry from Google through its search feature.
  • The search territory, dominated by Google for years, now appears to be losing ground.
  • Perplexity AI already has plans to integrate advertising into its services. In a recent interview, Srinivas revealed that Perplexity’s AI advertising won’t compromise the quality of the answers.
  • It remains to be seen how the search industry will shape up with multiple players vying for the top spot.
  • Meta has a history of not having a strong track record when it comes to copying others’ products.
