What’s Even The Point Of Xbox Game Pass Now?

  • Microsoft's Game Pass subscription service is attracting attention following recent closures of game development studios, including ones that Microsoft has acquired from Zenimax and Bethesda. The subscription service is viewed as a means to play games from these developers. The recent closures have led to questions on the real value of the Game Pass service. Game Pass is seen as akin to Netflix for games, providing subscribers access to a variety of titles including indie and big AAA games. While Xbox remains one of the companies leading the current acquisition trend in the gaming industry, with the recent closures the subscription service is starting to feel less purposeful.
  • Game Pass offers fans access to the games made by developers, studios acquired by Microsoft for Xbox, but now shuttered. This raises questions about the service's actual value.
  • While Game Pass didn't always provide the latest big-budget exclusives, it gave subscribers access to big AAA tentpoles from third-party publishers and indie darlings.
  • For developers like Tango Gameworks and Obsidian Entertainment, the assumption of safety post-acquisition allowed them to take risks they might not have had the chance to otherwise.
  • Both Tango Gameworks and Obsidian Entertainment credited a specific perk of being an Xbox-owned studio with the ability to bring unconventional games like Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush to life—Game Pass.
  • Both games were critically acclaimed and signaled Xbox's ambition to take risks on interesting game ideas. However, with the continued closure of recently acquired studios, including Tango Gameworks, Game Pass is starting to feel potentially purposeless.
  • Between a larger industry trend toward risk-averse development and indie devs reporting that deals for Game Pass are drying up, the service may need new ideas to stay useful.

Lets Reduce the Time it Takes for You to Pick Something to Watch on Netflix

  • Many people found it tedious to look through all the options Netflix has for their users, and that their suggestions weren’t organized in the most effective way.
  • Current Netflix users also talked about how they usually navigate through and choose shows based on suggestions from close ones, rather than the in-app suggestions of film.
  • Surprisingly, I was able to find quite a few people who have never used Netflix before. They all mentioned that they did not use Netflix due to its lack of variety.
  • A solution was to create a feature where each user gets to create a username, in order to create a profile.
  • Then the user will be able to share that username with their friends and follow each other.
  • Each profile would also have the option to create their own Top 10 favorite film lists, only seen by mutually connected friends.
  • This feature would be useful for instances where a user doesn’t want to look through the myriad of films in the home page.
  • Instead of endlessly scrolling, even without specific suggestions, users could direct themselves to film-taste trusted profiles to find something to watch.
  • These two new features on the app would be the only ‘social’ aspect of having profiles.
  • The features do not include texting nor any way of giving reactions, to ensure that the focus of the app does not shift from movie-watching to texting your friends.

'A F***ing Gut Stab': Game Industry Reacts To Shocking New Studio Closures

  • Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks have been shut down by Microsoft, with the publisher citing a need to focus on “high-impact” games.
  • Developers and fans alike are in disbelief, given that 2021 has been one of the worst years for cancellations, cuts, and closures in the gaming industry.
  • Arkane Austin was set up in 2006 and helped create Dishonored and Prey. Tango Gameworks was founded in 2010 and is known for Evil Within and Hi-Fi Rush.
  • For now, great teams are sunsetting before our eyes again, and it’s a gut stab,” wrote Dinga Bakaba, director at Arkane Austin sister-studio, Arkane Lyon.
  • Co-director on Redfall at Arkane Austin, Harvey Smith, called the news “terrible”.
  • Adam Boyes, co-CEO at Iron Galaxy Studios, tweeted a screencap of Microsoft's profits, while MIkey Dowling at Obsidian tweeted, “Why do I still do this?”
  • Reacting to the closures, Alistair Hatch wrote on Twitter, “I have so much love for the studios affected. The people that made those teams were incredible, hard-working, dedicated, and talented.”
  • Mike Wikan, the former Retro Studios developer who led design on Metroid Prime, added on LinkedIn, “Companies need to understand that burning your Creative Production Studios to the ground is NOT the path to profitability.”
  • Back when Microsoft acquired Bethesda in 2021, Arkane Studios' creatively ambitious projects didn’t always seem to find the audiences they deserved.
  • If nothing else, the newly acquired teams would have no shortage of other holes to fill in Xbox’s struggling first-party lineup.
