Tesla Cybercab to Use Remote Backup Drivers

  • Tesla’s Cybercab autonomous vehicles will be in the hands of safety drivers, according to notes from Deutsche Bank
  • The notes emphasised the need for backup drivers due to the technology weaknesses emergent in the operation of these cars, with Deutsche Bank stating the vehicles require a safety net so as to ensure ongoing success
  • Tesla’s Cybercab autonomous vehicles will therefore be partially dependent on safety drivers piloting the machines when required, acting as a backup when the self-driving apparatus encounters important blind spots
  • The news emerged after Deutsche Bank shared relevant notes from an investor meeting with Tesla representatives with Reuters last week, hinting that remote operators working from a distance may also be necessary to provide ongoing back-up for more automatic vehicle navigation tasks.
  • Tesla will also maintain a company-owned fleet of these machines when they officially hit the market, with these cars stepping into the ride-hailing industry in direct competition with current vehicle-hailing firms like Uber and Lyft.
  • Consumer concern over self-driving car safety and their ability to handle tricky roadways has been growing
  • GM’s Cruise autonomous car service has experienced some crashes and has struggled at times to perform in construction zones or when processing the signals of police and emergency vehicles.
  • Waymo has also suffered similar setbacks, resulting in local San Francisco residents placing traffic cones on the top of autonomous test cars to disrupt their performance. Some have even blazed the cars in protest
  • However, Waymo had commented earlier this year that operators supporting autonomous vehicles remotely often encounter input lag, rendering it far less useful in practice that it would appear on paper.
  • Tesla ultimately intends to build seamless self-driving functionality into their vehicles so they are less reliant on the dispatch of backup staff.
