A Beginners Guide to AWS (VPS) Virtual Private Cloud

  • AWS VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) allows you to create an isolated section of the AWS cloud where you can launch resources in a defined virtual network, providing security for your infrastructure.
  • In this guide, we explored two use cases, one to create a Saas application and another for remote work access to company's resources.
  • AWS provides multiple ways to establish connectivity with your VPC such as AWS Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, and AWS Client VPN.
  • To create VPC using console go to the VPC page, select Create VPC, choose the appropriate options in the subnets, route tables, network connections section, and click on Create VPC to create the VPC.
  • To validate the VPC network structure create two EC2 instances on the newly created VPC and place one in public subnet and another in a private subnet to test the connectivity.
  • We can automate the traditional approach using Infrastructure as code framework such as AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK).
  • By leveraging VPCs, you can isolate resources, control network traffic, and organize your architecture for optimal performance and security.
  • Understanding and utilizing VPCs is crucial for creating robust and secure cloud solutions.
  • In future posts, we will be utilizing VPC and ECS, to create a container-based deployment.

AI is bringing celebrities back from the dead, and it’s as creepy as it sounds

  • Virtually Parkinson, an AI-generated podcast featuring late British TV talk show host Michael Parkinson, will be released as an 8-part series later this year. The show is unscripted, but each guest will listen to the AI-generated Parkinson on headphones, as if he was a real person.
  • Polish radio station Off Radio Krakow recently replaced its human presenters with three AI bots that come complete with pictures on the station website. It even bagged an interview with Wislawa Szymborska, a Polish cultural icon, recently, even though she’s been dead since 2012. However, Off Radio Krakow abandoned its AI experiment due to the backlash it received.
  • Podcasting generated by AI continues to grow, with NotebookLM, Google’s podcast generator tool that produces a complete podcast in minutes from analysing an article or YouTube video. The presenters on this show sound completely human. It’s only a matter of time before a range of presenters will be available, leaving the future of humans presenting radio shows and podcasts uncertain.
  • Character AI is a website that lets visitors talk to long-dead historical figures like Socrates and Cleopatra. In the movie industry, AI has been used to de-age actors like Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. Using AI means the cost of de-ageing an actor is less than using CGI to de-age actors on a frame-by-frame basis.
  • Concerns are being expressed by artists and illustrators in creative industries over the likely impact of AI on their sector, with many worried that AI will either steal or devalue their jobs. Virtually Parkinson and Here, the $50m movie, both demonstrate the ways in which AI can be used to create experiences that wouldn’t have been possible before.
  • Widespread use of AI also raises ethical concerns
  • Although AI-generated podcasts like NotebookLM currently mark themselves out as non-human, when the podcast is of near-human quality and indistinguishable from a human presenter, more difficult questions about presenting ethics and empathy will arise.
  • Robert Downey Jr is an actor who has already indicated he would not like a representation of himself to be represented by AI after he has passed. He recently declared that he would sue all future executives who made replicas of him using AI.
  • AI has come a long way in the last decade, but its popularity also raises questions over how we feel about AI-generated content. It’s debatable whether audiences will regard it with as much enthusiasm as it’s creators.
  • AI looks set to change the world of filmmaking and broadcasting for good, but the downsides are still to be explored.
  • The virtuous cycle of AI’s application is that it should create experiences that are more engaging for audiences and end users. Whether it’s a good thing will be determined over time.

Microsoft stealthily installs Windows 10 update to nag you to upgrade to Windows 11 – and not for the first time

  • Microsoft is in the process of deploying a new patch which it says will allow it to force a future update to Windows 10 or 11 PCs, in addition to nagging users about support running out.
  • Patch KB5001716 is an update for Windows Update which allows notifications to be presented to Windows 10 (and 11) users who are running an unsupported version of Windows and is therefore insecure.
  • Presumably, these are revisions of KB5001716 being redelivered to Windows 10 (and 11) PCs. However, in some cases in the past, there were errors caused by the reinstallation that conflicted with previous installs of the patch in some way.
  • Microsoft says Windows may download and install feature updates to a device if it has reached the end of support for the currently installed version of Windows.
  • As a security measure, Microsoft is trying to keep devices secure, but the stealthy manner in which KB5001716 turns up on PCs has been criticised.
  • For users, further badgering to move to Windows 11 will be likely translations onto the pop-up notifications.
  • Users can head to View update history and Uninstall updates in the Windows Update page to remove KB5001716. This should then allow the latest version to install okay.
  • This won’t force an upgrade on a Windows 10 PC that isn’t compatible with the stricter requirements for Windows 11 – but it will continue to nag you about upgrading.
  • Normally, forced upgrades are for feature updates but migrating to a whole new OS, like jumping from Windows 10 to 11, is a much bigger move.
  • A new patch is being deployed to Windows 10 (and 11) PCs that will allow Microsoft to force a future update to the OS (to keep it in support), and also to nag users about support running out, too.

End of an era: Microsoft is planning to phase out Windows 11’s Mail and Calendar apps by the end of this year

  • Windows 11's built-in Mail and Calendar apps will no longer be supported by the end of 2024.
  • Users can still access emails and calendar events in view-only mode in the Mail and Calendar apps.
  • Users will need to switch to the web-based Outlook app to send or receive emails.
  • Microsoft aims to unify email and calendar management in Outlook.
  • The Mail and Calendar apps will be accessible via a 'view-only' mode.
  • The 'view-only' mode currently doesn't work offline, but Microsoft is working on adding support for this in the next few weeks.
  • Users have the option to downgrade their Mail and Calendar apps to previous versions but this loophole will stop working on December 31, 2024.
  • Some users have expressed concerns about the web-based Outlook app's lack of offline access and inconsistency with Windows 11 design.
  • Users can export data from the Mail and Calendar apps to third-party apps or Outlook.
  • Microsoft's decision to phase out the Mail and Calendar apps may not be well-received if the replacement Outlook web app lacks features and polish.

I tried a web browser without tabs, bookmarks, or navigation — and loved it

  • Horse, a new web browser, claims to cure tab hoarding by using trails instead of bookmarks, viewing history, or tabs. Trails are nested pages that can be arranged which allows users to view their browsing history. This novel approach is aimed at users such as researchers and students. Trails can be created manually, for example, to keep related pages associated with each other. It is a minimalist design, with excellent use of colour and translucency, making it a pleasant browsing experience.
  • This browser has a learning curve and does not have extension support, which could discourage users. It is also not clear if side trails or sub trails are preferable for certain uses. The Horse browser is targeted at users who want a different browsing experience but be prepared to pay $20 for a monthly subscription or a one-off payment of $60 for lifetime access.
