FAA Issues Final Rule for Powered-Lift Aircraft: A Major Milestone for eVTOL and Advanced Air Mobility

  • The Federal Aviation Administration’s recent issuance of the final draft of its Special Federal Aviation Regulation for powered lift aircraft regulations has drawn comment and positive reactions from across the industry.
  • The FAA today issued a final rule for the qualifications and training that instructors and pilots must have to fly aircraft in this “powered-lift” category, which have characteristics of both airplanes and helicopters.
  • While industry insiders say that the ruling still leaves some questions unanswered, the issuance of the rule represents a significant milestone in the development of the AAM industry.
  • The National Air Transportation Association, another key industry group, were equally positive about the newly released standards.
  • This performance-based rule is a critical step forward in enabling the eVTOL-segment of the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) industry to launch and scale.
  • It’s an important and encouraging step for the industry. We look forward to reviewing it in depth and working alongside our customers to operationalize it.
  • This comes ahead of schedule and incorporates key feedback from across the industry. This is yet another foundational element toward our goal of the U.S. leading the way in commercializing UAM.
  • The new rule also clarifies their operational requirements, including minimum safe altitudes and required visibility.
  • The FAA first issued its draft Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in June 2023, opening it up for public comment.
  • We can’t yet consider this ‘mission accomplished’ for U.S. leadership in advanced aviation – much work remains to be done.

Can I bring a drone on a cruise ship? Your ultimate guide to sailing the high skies

  • Different cruise lines have their own unique drone policies. Carnival Cruise Line permits passengers to bring drones onboard, but they are only allowed to fly them when onshore. Disney Cruise Line does not permit drones onboard at all. Meanwhile, Princess Cruises has a stricter drone policy that prohibits drones altogether, unless listing any company-sponsored events as an exception. Royal Caribbean also prohibits drones being flown onboard, but passengers can take them off the ship to fly on shore. Similarly, Norwegian Cruise Line has a “no flying onboard” policy for drones.
  • Passengers should research the local drone laws of each country they’ll be visiting as well as the rules of the airline they’re using as policies can vary. Drones should be stored safely when not in use and passengers should consider investing in drone insurance. Also, passengers should respect their surroundings when flying drones onshore. Passengers should consider getting creative with ground shots or use their phone’s camera to take time-lapse footage.

Ban on Chinese drones in Florida sparks challenges for mosquito control workers and firefighters

  • Florida's state-level rule change banning public use of non-approved drones may force mosquito control experts to send people into dangerous habitats, as they can no longer use drones made by DJI or Skydio.
  • Collier Mosquito Control District's fleet of eight mosquito-fighting drones, five of which were made by DJI, have become unusable due to the recent state-level ban on drones made in "countries of concern", which includes China.
  • The ban is a result of the American lawmakers' anti-China sentiment, as the Department of Defense and the Department of the Interior have already banned DJI drones within their agencies.
