Google’s Project Gameface lets people control their Android devices using gestures and facial expressions

  • Google's Project Gameface uses AI to interpret facial expressions and gestures into on-screen actions. Originally developed for gamers, the tech has since expanded into the accessibility sector. The technology tracks users' facial expressions and gestures with the camera and MediaPipe Face Landmarks Detection API, and translate them into on-screen cursor movements.
  • Users can assign a range of gestures to various commands, among these 52 various facial expressions which are recognised by the technology. This allows users with disabilities to enhance their interaction with digital environments for everyday use, meaning users can perform tasks by simple facial actions, such as assigning actions to click-and-drag when smiling or raising eyebrows.
  • Beyond Project Gameface, Google is also bringing other significant accessibility upgrades for Android devices. Google’s Lookout App now allows users in beta to use a “find mode”, in which the app helps the users to find physical objects in nearby locations. The app leverages the camera, panning through a whole room to identify objects such as a TV remote or a free table in a restaurant. Additionally, in Look to Speak there is a text-free mode which enables users to select emojis, photos and symbols alongside phrases.
  • Lens in Maps is also receiving an accessibility upgrade, with new and more detailed voice guidance in the form of TalkBack. Meanwhile, users will soon be able to search for and easily identify wheelchair-accessible businesses on Google Search or Maps. Business owners will themselves be able to add the Auracast attribute to their business profiles in Google Search and Maps, showing they are more accessible for those who require hearing assistance via Bluetooth-enabled headphones or hearing aids.
  • The tech upgrades were announced at Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference.
