To tune or not to tune? A guide to leveraging your data with LLMs

  • Large language models are increasingly being used to improve customer experiences and automate internal processes.
  • There are several methods to bring your data to foundation models, including prompt engineering, retrieval augmented generation (RAG), supervised fine-tuning (SFT), reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), and distillation.
  • Prompt engineering involves including the data in the instructions sent to the model, while RAG ensures model outputs are grounded on your data.
  • SFT is well-suited for tasks like classification or creating structured outputs from free text, while RLHF is useful for goals that are not well-described into categories or are difficult to quantify.
  • Distillation combines creating a smaller model that is faster to process data with making that model more specific to your tasks.
  • The decision of which method to use depends on whether the model needs to always give a citation of a source grounded in your data and how specific and difficult to quantify the desired model’s behavior is.
  • The methods can also be combined as per the convenience of the user.
  • Google Cloud offers various capabilities to try out these methods, including Prompt Engineering, RAG, SFT, RLHF, and Distillation, using APIs and code samples.
  • To get started, it is recommended to start simple and experiment to find out the best approach for your application.

No work items left unturned: How Dataflow mitigates stragglers

  • Dataflow has announced three new features for its fully-managed streaming analysis service; i.e., straggler detection, slow worker auto-mitigation, and hot key detection.
  • Stragglers, or tasks that significantly take longer to complete, can cause increased latency, higher costs, and reduced throughput in data processing pipelines.
  • Dataflow helps users in dealing with stragglers by providing detailed in-context tooling, root-cause analysis, and auto-mitigation through proactive load balancing and fixing unhealthy nodes.
  • The new straggler detection feature allows identifying detected stragglers and diagnosing the problem. Dataflow analyzes stragglers to identify the root cause for preventing future stragglers.
  • Dataflow now has a new hot key detection feature that identifies the hot key, which is a key representing more elements than other keys in the PCollection).
  • Auto-mitigation is the best solution against stragglers, and Dataflow's dynamic work rebalancing system can help prevent them. Its slow worker auto-mitigation feature automatically mitigates stragglers that are caused by slow workers.
  • Dataflow's new features enable users to minimize stragglers' impact, maintain precision and completeness, and not leave any shard behind for better-predicted processing pipelines.
  • To know more about troubleshooting stragglers in Dataflow, visit the guides published by Google Cloud.

Game-changing assets: Making concept art with Google Cloud's generative AI

  • Game developers can use generative AI services on Google Cloud using Model Garden on Vertex AI (which incorporates partner integrations such as Hugging Face and Civitai) to scale game-asset creation.
  • Google’s generative AI models can generate initial designs, 3D models, and textures that reflect the style of the game, streamlining the game-asset creation process.
  • In small game teams, the lack of assets can create a bottleneck; therefore, running the Model Garden on Vertex AI tools in the cloud offers a cost-effective solution.
  • The tools can create assets, including 2D and 3D models, textures, animations, and sounds and music.
  • The first step in game asset creation, generating concept art, can be accomplished using Vertex AI and Model Garden with Stable Diffusion.
  • The resulting concept art images from generative AI models will be stored in a Google Cloud Storage bucket for easy access and further refinement by artists.
  • The deployment of a LoRA model with stabilityai/stable-diffusion-xl-base-1.0 on a Vertex AI prediction endpoint can be done through Jupyter notebooks.
  • The generative AI models offer a way for game developers to quickly provide assets that unlock the rest of the game team in the short term, while allowing them to focus on long term goals like art direction and finalized assets.
  • Integration of Stable Diffusion-generated images into a game requires careful planning, including legal rights, customization, optimization, testing, ethics, compliance, documentation, and feedback.
  • Google Cloud provides a $300 free credit towards compute/storage costs for game developers.
