Looking Back on My Journey with Defense Ventures

  • Defense Ventures is an excellent model for providing top notch diverse career experiences to hungry and aspiring leaders in the defense realm who have an interest in entrepreneurship.
  • Its popularity was in full swing and the team at Shift.org was on cohort 14.
  • The program admitted and placed both civilian and military individuals from the DoD.
  • The board room described above belongs to none other than Insight Partners.
  • I was able to work with and advise multiple dual use and defense portfolio companies (portcos) that Insight Partners invested in.
  • Defense Ventures was managing multiple cohorts of fellows like me per year with a wide variety of defense-minded startups and VC firms.
  • This was just one memorable day in an 8-week span of my fellowship.
  • The third and most important development that occurred was this year’s unfortunate cancellation of the Defense Ventures program, after more than 20 successful cohorts.
  • Regardless of whether we choose to follow our own well thought out policies, I think there is still value in the Defense Ventures program to advance collaboration and innovation in our DoD acquisition workforce.
  • It was more than just a professional development opportunity.

AI Verse Tops Human Poetry in Reader Study, Rattling Creative Markets

  • Artificial intelligence poets are stealing the spotlight, with new research showing their verses outshine human-crafted ones in consumer appeal and often fool readers into thinking real poets pen them.
  • The surge in AI-generated creative content is forcing eCommerce companies to rethink content production costs, as AI's ability to produce engaging product descriptions, marketing copy, and visuals threatens traditional creative service pricing.
  • The study tested an AI model against canonical poets, revealing that AI poetry excelled in rhythm, beauty, and emotional resonance, with readers consistently misidentifying them as human work.
  • While AI-generated content is becoming harder to spot, some experts argue that AI is not yet advanced enough to replace human creatives completely, as human perspectives and the human touch are still vital for authenticity and emotional depth.

Mardi Witzel: Generative AI and the Trough of Disillusionment

  • Generative AI has entered a “trough of disillusionment,” a pit stop on the maturity and adoption graph.
  • Machine learning could be argued that it remains the more impactful, more understood and safer form of AI.
  • Continued investment in generative AI gathers risk and is contingent on the satisfaction and continuing support of early adopters.
  • The technology retains a magnetic appeal for many investors, though it is grounded in an uncertain possibility.
  • Enterprise customers will retrench, confronted with the weak ROI of many use cases of generative AI, and rethink how technology can support business priorities.
  • Machine learning might be seen as a smaller, more precise tool that can be applied to core business challenges with a clearer line of sight to ROI.
  • Machine learning has been around for decades and is applied in a wide cross-section of industries.
  • The pent-up demand for AI that delivers tangible results may stimulate a resurgent interest in traditional forms of technology such as machine learning.
  • Training large language models will cost between $10 and $100 billion in the next three years.
  • PolyML is an early-stage Canadian AI and machine learning company with novel technology.
