‘Batman: Arkham Shadow’ Behind-the-scenes – Insights & Artwork from Camouflaj
- VR game developer Camouflaj has been praised for its Batman: Arkham Shadow game, which brings the iconic superhero to the immersive technology world. The game followed the studio’s Iron Man VR release, which was similarly acclaimed. Building a game that includes the Arkham series’ signature combat in VR was considered to be the toughest aspect of the project, but Camouflaj created a team that was up for the challenge. Two gameplay prototypes, including one each for the grapple and cape glide locomotion, impressed everyone, as did the rendered visuals. The game had to fuse standard combat with extravagant boss battles, which the team approached by watching videos of previous efforts and finding styles that suit their purposes.
- There were challenges along the way, with the team admitting that not everything they tried worked out, but focusing on what would make the biggest impact helped towards landing the final game with fans. However, being tasked with adapting a well-known quantity to VR required fresh thinking. Camouflaj said it required separating the feelings behind the game from the mechanical aspects and then creating a whole new set of VR-specific mechanics that remained true to the original design. In the end, the combat suite was a standout element of the game, helping to deliver a complete offering that satisfied fans whilst battling harsh initial reaction to the game.
