Massively Overthinking: Breaking the load-bearing mechanics in MMORPGs

  • The parable of Chesterton’s Fence can be applied to MMORPGs. It argues that laws are like a fence across a road that should not be ripped down without trying to figure out why it was constructed. In MMORPG genre, game devs tried to 'reform' games by breaking fundamental mechanics that caused all-new problems.
  • EA brought in Diablo-minded developers to create Age of Shadows expansion for Ultima Online that completely demolished the gameplay's gear structure. The system had a good reason for existing, but the new system broke everything, including PvP, and took several developers to address and repair it.
  • Star Wars Galaxies' NGE is another example of breaking game mechanics. The developers wrecked a beloved free-form character building system that deleted whole playstyles and systems from the game. Deleting the bio-engineering skills from the game made the game part of the game literally unplayable, and it took SOE several years to restore all of those things - and it did, eventually.
  • WildStar's poorly executed idea of endgame design was a major MMO change that caused problems. Whether it was forced attunement to enter raid content or the large-scale Warplots PvP mode, they doomed the game.
  • LOTRO and DDO's server tech and database updates caused scads of problems, and the studio had to scramble to fix it. It wasn't thoroughly thought through, and this bit the game in the butt.
  • Guild Wars 2's mystic coin market value and balance were severely affected by an update, which wrecked the economy and created a bunker meta in sPvP for a while.
  • Most, if not all, changes made during The Secret World's transition to Secret World Legends broke the game. The game was off-putting to the average gamer, but loyal fans found its complexity special. By trying to create a game that attempts to cater to both, Funcom created a game that neither group was happy with.

Cracking Down On Organized Crime Behind Scam Centers

  • Meta is sharing its approach to countering the cross-border criminal organizations behind forced-labor scam compounds under our Dangerous Organizations and Individuals (DOI) and safety policies.
  • ‘Pig butchering’ is an egregious and sophisticated fraud scam where the target is manipulated to deposit more and more money into an investment scheme, often using cryptocurrency, and ultimately lose that money.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, scam compounds run by organized crime emerged in the Asia Pacific region as one of the major sources of ‘pig butchering’ and other scam activity.
  • At the outset, Meta actively engaged with expert NGOs and law enforcement partners to better understand the modus operandi of these criminal groups.
  • The criminal compounds force their workers to engage in a wide range of malicious activity, from cryptocurrency, gambling, loan and investment scams (e.g., ‘pig butchering’) to government and other impersonation scams.
  • Meta relies on its DOI policies as the most effective and appropriate set of measures for disrupting organized crime.
  • This year alone, Meta has taken down over two million accounts associated with scam centers in Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, the United Arab Emirates and the Philippines.
  • Meta is working with law enforcement agencies around the globe to share its insights into how this criminal industry operates and help law enforcement protect communities from these scams.
  • Teams across Meta are constantly rolling out new product features to help protect people on its apps from known scam tactics at scale.
  • Meta will continue sharing regular updates about its work to counter scams more broadly, including safety tips and product updates rolled out across its apps.

Vague Patch Notes: The ridiculous marketing doublespeak around MMORPGs

  • New World marketing department has tried to brand it as anything other than an MMORPG.
  • Marketing departments try to avoid MMORPG as a term to sell games to The Average Gamer.
  • It's ridiculous to assume you can trick people into playing a game by calling it something else.
  • If a video game requires an online connection, involves playing with lots of other people in a shared world and has a persistent landscape, it's going to be realized as an MMORPG.
  • Marketing teams try to set different expectations for the future of the game than what they are initially.
  • Sometimes words are used to define not what the game is but what it is expected to be.
  • Calling the game a one-time purchase ARPG will be enough to keep everybody satisfied.
  • People are trying to make the best of an awkward situation with some creative marketing when they have nothing but bad options.
  • When Amazon says New World is something other than an MMORPG, it doesn't really mean the game as it exists has changed.
  • It's simply signaling that it doesn't plan to support the game with MMORPG-tier content the way MMORPG fans expect.

  • The goal of any social network is to create a community, and the most significant challenge is acquiring users. This is called the Cold Start Problem, and it’s a challenge for new communities.
  • RecomendeMe used personalization via early adopters to bypass the Cold Start Problem.
  • Early success comes not only from algorithms but also from a community of like-minded individuals.
  • Profiles are more than a username or avatar. It’s a gateway to human connection, and to create a sense of community likes and dislikes are integral to the experience.
  • RecomendeMe aims to create a space that celebrates cultural diversity while prioritizing the human aspect of recommendations.
  • One of the challenges observed in today’s digital ecosystem is the fragmentation of interests. RecomendeMe aims to bridge this gap.
  • RecomendeMe’s ultimate goal is to become a space where people can share, discover, and connect over cultural content.
  • RecomendeMe wanted to create a space where recommendations feel alive, authentic, and personal again.
