Apple releases iPadOS 18 for iPad

Apple has released iPadOS 18 with new features designed for the unique capabilities of iPad, Calculator comes to iPad with Math Notes. Additionally, iPad users now have more ways to customize the Home Screen and Control Center. Users receive the biggest redesign of the Photos app ever, new ways to express themselves in Messages, and so much more.

Users can now customize their Home Screen in exciting new ways by placing apps and widgets in any open position to frame the wallpaper or create the ideal layout on each page.
Photos app receives its most significant update ever, bringing users powerful new tools that make it easier to find what they are looking for. A simplified and customizable app layout takes advantage of the larger display on iPad.
New privacy controls give users more ways to control who can see their apps, how they share their contacts, and how their iPad connects to accessories.
Apple Intelligence allows users to refine their words by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text nearly everywhere they write. Siri becomes more natural, flexible and gets a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen.
Later this fall, AirPods Pro 2 add a clinical-grade, over-the-counter Hearing Aid capability for users with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.
iPadOS 18 is available for iPad Pro (M4), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later), iPad Air (M2), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad (7th generation and later), and iPad mini (5th generation and later).

Apple releases watchOS 11 for Apple Watch

watchOS 11 brings powerful health and fitness insights, along with more personalization, intelligence, and ways to stay connected.
Apple Watch offers a feature to help identify signs of sleep apnea, and the new Vitals app allows users to check their key health metrics at a glance and gain better context on their health.
Users can view their nightly Breathing Disturbances in the Health app.
Sleep apnea notifications algorithm analyzes breathing disturbance data every 30 days, notifying users when it identifies signs of sleep apnea.
The Smart Stack and Photos face use intelligence to offer a more individualized experience, and Check In, the Translate app, and new capabilities for the double tap gesture come to Apple Watch for more convenience and ways to stay connected.
Training load is a way to measure how workouts are impacting a user’s body over time. Apple Watch now offers users unique insights to understand their training load.
With watchOS 11, Activity rings are even more customizable. Users can now customize activity ring goals by the day of the week.
Additional support has also been added for users who log a pregnancy in the Health app.
watchOS 11 introduces three new watch faces – the updated Photos face, the Flux face, and the Reflections face – designed to take advantage of the bigger display and faster refresh rate on Apple Watch Series 10.
To help users plan and enjoy open water activities, watchOS 11 introduces a new Tides app to Apple Watch.

Apple releases visionOS 2 for Apple Vision Pro

Apple has released visionOS 2 for Apple Vision Pro users, bringing several updates to the user’s experience.
The update allows 2D images in the Photos app to be transformed into spatial photos with natural-looking depth and dimension.
Users can also share spatial photos with SharePlay in the Photos app or with Vimeo for others to experience on Apple Vision Pro.
VisionOS 2 also features intuitive new hand gestures, making it easier to navigate and access features.
Productivity on Apple Vision Pro is enhanced with the ability to use a mouse, customise Home View and even detect and reveal users’ Magic Keyboards.
Safari users can watch popular videos from sites like Netflix and YouTube and new stunning environments have been added.
New accessibility features such as Live Captions have been added, while the new Mindfulness app helps users achieve calm and focus.
Apple Vision Pro can be enabled as an Airplay receiver, allowing users to view content from a nearby iPad, iPhone or Mac.

Apple TV+ celebrated the world premiere of French-language drama series 'La Maison' in Paris, France.
The 10-episode series provides a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion world and will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting September 20, 2024.
The show follows the scandal and reinvention of an iconic fashion house, Maison LEDU, after a viral video involving star designer Vincent Ledu.

MacOS Sequoia is Available to Download Now

macOS Sequoia, version 15.0, has been released, bringing new features and enhancements to Macs.
Most notable is the iPhone Mirroring feature that allows control of the user's iPhone from a Mac via the cursor.
Other additions include a dedicated Passwords app, easier window tiling, more wallpapers and screensavers, and Distraction Control and Highlights in Safari.
To download the new update, users can go to the  Apple menu, select 'System Settings', 'General', then 'Software Update', and choose 'Update Now'.
The new release also includes Apple Intelligence AI features that help with writing, summarizing and rewording text, and ChatGPT integration.
Users should backup their system via Time Machine or their preferred method before installing the system software update.
Features of macOS Sequoia listed in the release notes include the ability to access and control your iPhone on Mac, tiled window enhancements, redesigned Reader in Safari, audio transcription in Notes and more.
Direct download links to macOS Sequoia 15 installer and IPSW files are available.
Some features, such as iPhone Mirroring, require an iPhone with iOS 18.0 or later.
macOS Sequoia is available to all Mac users and can be downloaded and installed now.

New benchmarks show iPhone 16 Pro’s A18 Pro chip beats Apple’s M1

A new benchmark shows that the A18 Pro chip in the iPhone 16 Pro outperforms Apple's M1 chip.
The A18 Pro chip scored 3429 in single-core and 8790 in multi-core performance, making it 15-20% faster than the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro and 30-35% faster than the A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 15.
The A18 Pro chip also surpasses the M1 chip, with a multi-core score of 8790, which is 5% faster than the average multi-core score of the M1 chip.
This showcases the impressive capabilities of Apple's chip design team, delivering M1-level performance in a pocket-sized device just four years after the M1 chip's debut.

For those hesitant to upgrade, Apple is also releasing security-only updates for iOS 17.7, iPadOS 17.7, and macOS 14.7.

Apple increases battery replacement cost by 20% in iPhone 16 Pro models

Apple has increased its out-of-warranty battery replacement fee for iPhone 16 Pro models by 20 percent.
The battery replacement fee for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max is now $119, up from $99 for iPhone 15 Pro models.
The fee remains $99 for the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models.
Customers with AppleCare+ can still get an iPhone 16 Pro battery replaced for free, if the battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity.

Authd is a new authentication daemon for Ubuntu that allows integration with cloud-based identity providers for both Ubuntu Desktop and Server.
Authd currently supports Microsoft Entra ID as an identity provider, with plans to introduce additional providers in the future.
The goal of Authd is to bring Ubuntu authentication to the cloud and improve the strength and confidence of authentication events.
Authd is based on the Oauth Device Authorization Grant and consists of an authentication daemon and identity brokers.
