The first improvement in RDP in a long time?

  • Microsoft recently announced H.265 video codec support for the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) protocol used in its Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) product, which allows raw media to be compressed into a more efficient format when being streamed. While this is a positive development for users, the RDP protocol still lags behind Citrix and Other's HDX and Blast protocols in terms of customization and bandwidth adjustments.
  • Microsoft's RDP protocol sees little innovation compared to Citrix and Other protocols HDX and Blast.
  • Shortpath using UDP/3390 is an improvement in the RDP protocol but has been part of RDS using Gateway for a while.
  • Microsoft has released little news regarding the RDP protocol specification, with only support for newer Windows versions and integration with Entra ID.
  • Although the protocol has little customization compared to HDX and Blast, Microsoft has recently introduced H.265 support for the RDP protocol in its Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) product.
  • H.265 support is not a game-changer, as both Citrix and Others already support AV1, a newer protocol than H.265.
  • Microsoft now needs to invest more in the RDP protocol stack and improve it for high-latency and high-packet loss scenarios.
  • The RDP protocol is in need of better throughput where high bandwidth connections are available.
  • Support for AV1 codec in RDP protocol is essential to keep up with the market.
  • H.265 support is only available for specific virtual machines and configuring H.265 can only be done using group policy at the moment.

Intel Core Ultra 5 245K review: where Arrow Lake breaks down

  • Intel Core Ultra 5 245K is a new CPU from Intel that has not impressed due to inconsistent performance and lack of gaming gains. This is despite the new Arrow Lake architecture on which it is built. It struggles with gaming performance and lags behind AMD competition and Intel's last-gen options in terms of value.
  • The Core Ultra 5 245K has 14 cores split across six performance (P) cores and eight efficient (E) cores, with each core being more powerful. Cache has been reduced to save power, resulting in inconsistencies in gaming performance where more cache would have helped.
  • Test configurations revealed that the Core Ultra 5 245K scales well with higher-speed memory and showed some improvements in certain applications. However, the CPU's performance was inconsistent in other tasks, even though it outclassed a current-gen CPU like the Ryzen 7 9700X in some workloads.
  • The Core Ultra 5 245K failed at gaming, with inconsistent performance in graphically-intensive games like Final Fantasy XIV and Cyberpunk 2077. These issues make it difficult to justify a mid-range CPU in such a price range for gamers, especially as better performing alternatives are available from both Intel and AMD.
  • The Core i5 14600K, which is cheaper and provides better gaming performance, is an alternative to the Core Ultra 5 245K. Intel's last-gen CPUs too offer more consistent performance across tasks, better than the new Arrow Lake CPUs.

EU events on curbing big tech ‘distorted’ by attenders with industry links

  • More than one in five people who attended EU workshops on regulating big tech companies did not disclose links with the industry when they applied according to campaigners, who suggest hidden networks are distorting public debate.
  • Transparency campaigners at three NGOs analysed almost 4,000 registrations for European Commission workshops held earlier this year to examine compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
  • The NGO researchers discovered that 21% of attendees, who were employed by law firms, lobby groups, trade associations and thinktanks, had failed to refer to their links to the companies being discussed.
  • The DMA, which came into force in March 2022, identified six tech giants: Google's parent Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft as “gatekeepers” who have to comply with EU rules to ensure fair competition.
  • Large tech companies cannot treat their own products and services more favourably than competitors, or prevent uninstalling of pre-installed software.
  • Researchers counted representatives from 53 lobbying and public affairs firms at the workshops. FleishmanHillard and Flint Europe were among the firms that had represented or worked for Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft but did not disclose this fact, according to the report.
  • The NGOs turned a spotlight on the International Center for Law and Economics, a research organisation that describes itself as privately funded. The ICLE was present at the Amazon event but did not inform the attendees that it was funded by Amazon and Meta.
  • Max Bank, a campaigner at LobbyControl, described the situation as a “classic David versus Goliath” struggle, adding that unless the European Union strengthens its enforcement capabilities, the promise of the DMA to limit the power of big tech could fall short.
  • The report was compiled by Corporate Europe Observatory in Brussels, Germany’s LobbyControl and the Amsterdam-based NGO Somo.
  • The commission employed 80 people for its DMA unit while the six tech gatekeepers and their allies had 106 employees and 282 lawyers and lobbyists.
