Joseph Jacks bets on open source startups, a ‘paradox of philanthropy and capitalism’

  • Open Source Capital has invested in over 80 open-source startups, including Notion alternative AppFlowy, Web development framework Remix and management platform Cerbos.
  • Founder Joseph Jacks believes open-sourced philanthropy dovetails with sustainable business models, making it possible to strike a balance between the two, regardless of the product or service offered.
  • Jacks is betting 'open core' will take over from closed-core SaaS businesses and predicts such units will eventually dominate the start-up scene.
  • Open Source Capital's limited partners include Automattic CEO and WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg, Red Hat co-founder Bob Young, GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner, and founding Google investor Ram Shriram among other.
  • OSS Capital has raised three funds, plans to close a fourth by early 2026, invested at seed level in most companies and led a Series A funding round for W4 Games last year.
  • Jacks created KubeCon and founded commercial Kubernetes firm Kismatic, which was sold to Apprenda.
  • OpenBB CEO Didier Lopes said OSS Capital's input and contacts were valuable after his $8.5m seed round, with Kismatic donating the Kubernetes community conference to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in 2016.
  • GitLab CEO and co-founder Sid Sijbrandij launched Open Core Ventures (OCV) in 2020, and while it's slightly different in that it's adopting more of an incubator approach to building and investing in companies around existing open source projects, it has a similar underlying philosophy.
  • OSS Capital's focus is on commercial open-source software (COSS), typically software-as-a-service (SaaS) apps that use open source as a core component.
  • OSS Capital has made a handful of investments in cryptocurrencies, including $40m for Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong's ResearchHub, which has prompted it to move from an ERA to an RIA in order to comply with regulatory demands.

What open-source AI models should your enterprise use? Endor Labs analyzes them all

  • Endor Labs has developed Endor Labs Scores for AI Models, which uses 50 out-of-the-box metrics to score models based on security, activity, quality and popularity.
  • The new platform will initially score more than 900k open-source AI models available on Hugging Face.
  • Models are being built on top of each other and this presents problems when it comes to visibility and security.
  • Endor's platform scores models based on popularity and security, examining the date of creation and update.
  • AI models are akin to open source software, making it difficult for developers to know that their foundational elements are trustworthy, secure and reliable.
  • Security in AI models is complex and interesting due to numerous vulnerabilities and risks, making visibility of utmost importance.
  • Endor will eventually expand beyond Hugging Face and will deploy LLMs that parse, organize and analyze data, automatically and continuously scanning for model updates or alterations.
  • Basic testing is not something that can be done lightly or easily, as the data that is available can be convoluted and fragmented making it quite painful for people to read and understand.
  • Security and licensing obstacles must be overcome, whilst companies handling AI models must also be aware of requirements regarding intellectual property and copyright terms.
  • LLMs are larger and more complex to evaluate than traditional open-source dependencies.

OCP Summit 2024: The open future of networking hardware for AI

  • At Open Compute Project Summit (OCP) 2024, we’re sharing details about our next-generation network fabric for our AI training clusters.
  • We’ve expanded our network hardware portfolio and are contributing two new disaggregated network fabrics and a new NIC to OCP.
  • Meta believes that open hardware drives innovation, and open hardware takes on an important role in assisting with disaggregation.
  • DSF fabric allows us to build large, non-blocking fabrics to support high-bandwidth AI clusters, and supports an open and standard Ethernet-based RoCE interface.
  • Meta will deploy two next-generation 400G fabric switches, the Minipack3 and the Cisco 8501, both of which are backward compatible.
  • Meta's data center fabrics have evolved from 200 Gbps/400 Gbps to 400 Gbps/800 Gbps, and 2x400G optics have already been deployed in our data centers.
  • Developers and engineers from all over the world can work with this open hardware and contribute their own software that they, in turn, can use themselves and share with the wider industry.
  • FBNIC, a true multi-host foundational NIC designed by Meta, contains the first of our Meta-designed network ASICs for our server fleet and MTIA solutions.
  • FBNIC's key features include network interfaces for up to 4x100/4x50/4x25 GE with SerDes support, HW offloads, header-data split to assist zero-copy, and compliance with OCP NIC 3.0 design specification.
  • Meta envisions a future of AI hardware systems that are not only scalable but also open and collaborative, and encourages anyone who wants to help advance the future of networking hardware for AI to engage with OCP and Meta.

Meta’s open AI hardware vision

  • Meta showcased their open AI hardware designs, including a new AI platform, advanced open rack design, and network fabrics and components at the Open Compute Project (OCP).
  • Their increasingly large AI workloads have pushed their infrastructure to operate across more than 16,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, growing to two 24K-GPU clusters, requiring a high-performance, multi-tier, non-blocking network fabric that can utilize modern congestion control.
  • Meta expects the amount of compute needed for AI training will grow significantly from where they are today.
  • To support this growth, they need open hardware solutions to develop new architectures, network fabrics, and system designs.
  • They announced their new high-powered rack designed for AI workloads, Catalina, and have expanded their Grand Teton platform to support the AMD Instinct MI300X. They have also developed the Open Disaggregated Scheduled Fabric to overcome limitations in scale, component supply options, and power density.
  • Meta is committed to open-source AI and believes prioritizing open and standardized models and frameworks alongside open AI hardware systems is essential for AI advancements.
  • Meta encourages those passionate about building the future of AI to engage with the OCP community to unlock the true promise of open AI for everyone.

WordPress is Entering its End-Stage Founder Period

  • WordPress is entering its “end-stage founder” period.
  • End-Stage Founder Periods (3 Ways to Recognize Them) are typified by flat-line growth, inexplicable and un-reproducible growth curves, higher than normal customer churn and employee attrition.
  • All Founders Exit, but not all exits look the same.
  • Most companies collapse with the demise of the founder, because the founder never truly empowered their teams, listened to their customers or the market.
  • Do not turn on your people, Your clients, team members, and partner ecosystem are delivering valuable feedback.
  • Step the Founder back. Launching a desperate public relations offensive against WPEngine has emboldened and granted tremendous credibility to detractors when you should actually be building the space for your promoters.
  • Moving away from the day-to-day and handing over the operation to a tried-and-true professional can be tempered with a Founder’s continuing directional vision-setting and future-casting.
  • The Web has reached mature saturation: the economics have been largely optimized, and now the very essence of what created the fertile soil on which WordPress was founded - user-generated content with view-driven community-building - has been exposed as, sadly, without much commercial value.
  • But if WordPress can make the leap to a new modality, a new medium, and side-step the mobile wars and AR/VR search-fest, it could become a new brand that transcends.
  • It just starts with listening generously and finding the problems that people are trying to solve, that no one is yet solving.
