How to know if your computer got hacked, what to do next

  • If you think you’ve been hacked, take a break and disconnect your computer from the internet and run the antivirus scan.
  • If antivirus scan comes up negative, contact antivirus customer service immediately.
  • If you don’t have antivirus, install one and run a scan.
  • Sometimes, formatting the device to factory settings or reformatting can be a solution.
  • Delete suspicious extensions and clear browser history. In case of recurring settings, uninstall then reinstall the browser.
  • Checking the computer’s activity monitor occasionally is a healthy practice. Follow the online instructions for PC MAC to prevent remote access.
  • Two-factor authentication is highly recommended to create a barrier against unauthorized access even if a hacker discovers your email or username.
  • Antivirus protection installed on all devices can alert you of phishing emails or ransomware scams.
  • Configure email settings to not automatically download suspicious links. Keep emails received in Rich Text format to decide which emails load images, reducing the risk of malware.
  • Make use of a safe copy of your data and backup the data off your computer and safely on an external hard drive or the cloud in case of hacking.

Beyond HODLing: How to Earn Passive Income with Bitcoin in DeFi

  • Earning passive yield through DeFi lending and borrowing protocols such as Compound, MakerDAO, and Sumer.money is one of the efficient ways to optimize idle crypto portfolios.
  • Most of these opportunities are compatible with Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain networks, limiting opportunities for BTC holders.
  • To optimize their portfolio, BTC holders can leverage DeFi protocols such as Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), Omni-Chain Synthetic assets, and BTC briding on Avalanche.
  • WBTC is an ERC-20 token that allows BTC users to leverage the Ethereum ecosystem to earn interest and farm yield.
  • However, it involves sending BTC to a centralized entity or exchange such as BitGo, which locks the BTC and mints WBTC.
  • Omni-Chain Synthetic Assets, such as the Sumer.money protocol, enable cross-chain communication without involving central custodians.
  • The protocol allows BTC users to deposit their BTC on the native blockchain, which mints an equivalent amount of synthetic BTC (SuBTC) that can operate across all supported blockchain networks.
  • Bridging Bitcoin to the Avalanche blockchain is also an option that involves converting BTC to BTC.b through a decentralized and non-custodial approach.
  • This smart contract network relies on a bridge address, which handles the conversion process to enable users to interact with Avalanche’s DeFi opportunities.
  • Investors who already own BTC should look for ways to optimize their portfolio by investing in DeFi yields and avoid leaving their digital assets idle capital.

Single-Stage-to-Orbit: The Launch Technology We Wish Was Real

  • Single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) space vehicles hold the potential of providing a cheaper way to reach orbit.
  • SSTO refers to any spacecraft that’s capable of achieving orbit using a single, unified propulsion system and without shedding any part of the craft.
  • This departure from traditional multi-stage rockets requires a lot of fuel and a lower mass, which poses technical challenges.
  • The mass of fuel required scales exponentially with delta-V, resulting in the majority of the launch vehicle’s mass being dedicated to propellants.
  • Staged rockets are a wasteful way to fly because they shed structure as fuel burns away and then discarded.
  • Current space research points out that creating SSTO launches with conventional rocket technology is possible. Skylon, VentureStar, and Delta Clipper were notable proposals that never fully materialised.
  • Skylon intended to operate as a reusable spaceplane fueled by hydrogen. It would take off and gain the necessary altitude at which point it would switch to liquid oxygen for the final acceleration phase up to orbital velocity.
  • VentureStar was designed for single pole-to-equatorial orbit flights from earth. It would take off vertically and had an innovative “aerospike” rocket engine.
  • Delta Clipper was designed for vertical takeoff and landing and to eventually fly on air-breathing supersonic combustion engines. The program was eventually discontinued.
  • Although SSTO vehicles offer benefits due to their simplified launch vehicles architecture, technical hurdles need to be overcome before this tantalizing future goal becomes a practical reality.

Researchers call out QNAP for dragging its heels on patch development

  • Researchers at watchTowr discovered 15 vulnerabilities in QNAP's QTS, QuTSCLoud, and QTS hero operating systems.
  • Despite most being reported in early January, and one as far back as December 2023, only four have received patches so far.
  • The other six of the 11 bugs were accepted and validated by QNAP, and all have CVEs assigned to them, but the vendor still hasn't released patches.
  • Five of the remaining bugs are still under embargo or have no fix available, in which case users should retire their devices.
  • However, given its prior history of suffering damaging attacks, patches should probably be developed at a faster rate.
  • After successful infections, Qlocker demanded 0.01 Bitcoin as a ransom payment.
  • The researchers said they empathize with QNAP, which manages a codebase heavily composed of ten-year-old code.
  • Many NAS owners at the time didn't respond positively, since the updates could have led to important data loss.
  • The researchers said QNAP was highly cooperative throughout the disclosure process, but patching speed was an issue.
  • WatchTowr researchers empathize with QNAP, but patches should come faster, given prior attacks.
