This Week in Security: License Plates, TP-Link, and Attacking Devs

  • Digital license plates are vulnerable to hacking unless built to be bulletproof. Reviver plates had a programming port on the back that exposed JTAG port which could be used to overwrite its firmware. The attack could be prevented with signed firmware and an MCU that enforces it.
  • Malicious RDP endpoints give away too much control over a desktop when a .rdp file is sent to the target. It allows the sharing of local resources and has shown up in the wild. The attack campaign has been attributed to APT29, CozyBear and is believed to be associated with Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service.
  • McDonald’s India has a bug bounty program that has helped identify a series of Broken Object Level Authorization bugs. Any user of the web app is issued a token valid for access to any Order ID in the system, allowing the user the ability to add food to another user’s cart with a total price of a single rupee. The fixes came two months after being reported.
  • The reason for the US Government discussing a plan to ban TP-Link device purchases is because of the security problems associated with its products and its close relationship with the Chinese government policy of newly-found vulnerabilities first being reported to the Chinese government, before fixes being rolled out.
  • Two malware campaigns are targeting developers, with malicious VSCode extensions being uploaded to the marketplace to target cryptocurrency users and the OtterCookie campaign from North Korea targeting developers on fake job interviews. Both ask to install malicious packages that deploy data stealers.
  • The Craft CMS vulnerability was caused by register_argc_argv being turned on, allowing a naive application to think it’s running on the command line when query strings are used.
  • Australia is setting 2030 as the target for retiring cryptography primitives that aren't quantum resistant. RSA, Elliptic-curve, and even SHA-256 will be phased out.
  • The discovery of 29 new vulnerabilities found in GStreamer using a custom corpus generator showed fuzzing continues to discover flaws in code.
