Hands-on: Shiftall MeganeX Superlight Packs a Wishlist of Ergonomics Into a Tiny Package

  • Japan-based Shiftall plans to release an ultra-compact VR headset, the MeganeX Superlight, which delivers optical adjustments, such as IPD and eye-relief, which are standard for any headset.
  • The MeganeX Superlight has a 13.6MP per-eye resolution as well as and a 90Hz refresh rate, therefore, the headset calls for a top-tier PC to run high-quality VR content.
  • The headset is set to be perfect for flight simulators where long sightlines to distant objects are common, and for virtual desktops where resolving fine text is crucial.
  • The headset will reportedly begin shipping between February and March next year, starting from a retail price of $1900.
  • The MeganeX Superlight is designed for the SteamVR ecosystem and can be purchased as a headset only, meaning buyers need to bring their own SteamVR Tracking beacons and controllers.
  • The MeganeX Superlight includes new adjustments such as IPD, eye-relief, diopter, a flip-up visor, and a lens angle adjustment, making it easier to adjust to fit each individual and giving them the most comfortable visual experience.
  • One drawback of the headset is the lack of built-in audio, which has been rectified by including optional audio headstraps available for separate purchase.
  • Another disadvantage of the headset is the cost, as it is an expensive gadget, which costs $1,900.
  • Shiftall CEO Takuma Iwasa said the headset is primarily targeted towards hardcore VR users who are willing to spend big on maximizing their VR experience, especially those using VRChat for long stretches of time.
  • Shiftall is on track to deliver an impressive headset granted it can work out a few tweaks before crossing the finish line. If the company can find a group of users who love the MeganeX Superlight, it will have proven VR's success among hardcore fans willing to spend a lot to improve their experience

VR Is Changing War & Sex, Why Are We Still Acting Like It Is Just A Game?

  • Virtual Reality (VR) is changing the way we perceive war and sex, yet people are still treating it like a game as corporations promote their brands rather than educate users. Tech giants, Apple and Meta, market the same technology packaged as consumer-grade VR against FPV (first-person view) display, which is single-purpose. Anduril, a Silicon Valley company, is developing technology that can command and control a fleet of remote-controlled drones to map terrain and obliterate its intended target.
  • VR is also changing the face of transportation, offering a glimpse of a future where self-driving vehicles will transport passengers across the United States at high speed while using the VR headset to simulate virtual environments. VR is also disrupting the sex industry, and anyone can take on any sexual role using a virtual environment.
  • While people discuss the benefits of VR gaming, they forgot that virtual reality is essentially a shortcut in which you can forget the branding exercises that corporations use to promote their brands. VR has already begun transforming our lives, but most people are still unaware of it. Roblox, VRChat, Rec Room, and Horizon Worlds are virtual playgrounds that kids frequently use, but they are also being used by adults pretending to be children, which raises mental health concerns.
  • The author insists that a VR headset is not similar to Nintendo Switch, as it is the delivery mechanism for a human behavioral paradigm shift that followed the printing press. While developers have expressed concern over Meta's promotion of free-to-play Horizon Worlds content over paid projects, consumers must recognize the cultural and societal impact VR already has.
  • Therefore, it's crucial to understand the risks and benefits of virtual reality. It is changing the way we perceive war, sex, and transportation and having a significant impact on human behavior. Rather than seeing VR as just another gaming experience, individuals must educate themselves about its impact and influence in our society.

Quest v71 Brings Design Refresh, AI Audio To Expression, Smoother Passthrough, And More

  • Quest v71 is a massive update, bringing design refresh and new features to Meta's Horizon OS; it features Audio to Expression, an on-device AI model that provides estimated facial expressions without physical tracking hardware.
  • This update also brings smoother passthrough, Training mode support for trains, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Surround, a first-party calendar app, improvements to scene mesh scanning, a volume mixer for app and call audio, and an app permissions indicator on the menu bar.
  • The most significant change is the Settings interface, which has been completely revamped with a side tab design, resembling iPadOS and regular Android on tablets; Meta also stated that search within Settings has been improved.
  • Meta has also improved camera frame rates to align with display frame rates, making passthrough look smoother; v71 adds support for both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 surround audio, with the headset's rotation panning the soundscape.
  • With v71, you can access your PC as a virtual screen in Horizon OS using Meta's first-party software via a shortcut in Quick Settings, rather than searching through your app library for it.
  • Meta says you'll be able to update the mesh for a room from Settings, building on and refining the original mesh instead of rescanning it from scratch; you'll also see a miniature 3D representation of each room saved.
  • You can adjust the volume of Calls separately from the volume of App & Media audio from Quick Settings to avoid lowering the audio volume of each game to hear other people in your Horizon Party, WhatsApp/Messenger call, or other communications platform.
  • With v71, you'll be able to send videos to your Horizon followers in Horizon chats; this supports both flat videos and Apple spatial videos, allowing you to send spatial videos you captured with your iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 series phone.
  • Meta says you can now pair Touch controllers and Logitech MX Ink styluses inside the headset, just like you already can with gamepads.
  • Meta added real-time permissions indicator to the universal menu bar of Horizon OS, letting you know which features are currently being accessed by apps.

Meta Horizon Hyperscape: Hands-on with the Hyperscape

  • Meta Horizon Hyperscape is an app designed exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, which allows users to explore photorealistic spaces in VR.
  • The demo version of the app is currently available for free to US users on the Meta Horizon store.
  • Meta Horizon Hyperscape could be one of the most exciting applications available for both the Quest 3 and the Quest 3S.
  • Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed that in the future, anyone will be able to use the tool to build and explore any real-world space in virtual reality.
  • Meta’s cloud ecosystem recreates the space in virtual reality using photogrammetry and Gaussian splatting techniques.
  • Meta hasn’t “recreated the wheel” with its application. It’s really just building on technologies we’ve already had in virtual reality for some time.
  • In the future, we’d like to see more applications like this supporting connections with VR shoes and treadmills for a more immersive experience.
  • Once solutions like Meta Horizon Hyperspace become more stable and consistent in the experience they can deliver, the impact on the extended reality space will be outstanding.
  • Meta might not be the first company to experiment with tools like Horizon Hyperscape.
  • It’s easy to imagine a future where developers and VR designers rely on applications like this daily to create more immersive, hyper-realistic environments with less cost and complexity.

Reality check: AR, VR transforms training for packaging manufacturers

  • Technologies enabling augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) training experiences are slowly gaining traction in packaging companies across the world such as Greif, Papacks, Smurfit Westrock and Sonoco.
  • AR and VR are currently best suited for frontline workers such as those in the heavy manufacturing industry to perform training, but not management employees.
  • Although the adoption rate of such technologies remains small, it is growing quickly and may potentially transform the way packaging companies operate.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures have been the driving factors behind an uptick in the market demand for AR and VR.
  • AR technology used for internal company purposes is only beginning to gain traction.
  • The benefits of AR and VR technologies for most employees’ safety during training experiences makes it a standout prospect over the next five or six years.
  • XR tools are a one-time investment that reduce or eliminate the perennial need for employee travel saving company costs as well as emissions.
  • Companies must target XR technology usage aimed at employees whose work requires operating or maintaining heavy machinery.
  • Companies recommend a measured response to mitigate financial risk while integrating extended reality into company training and other processes.
  • AR and VR technologies possess enormous promise for boosting employees’ safety during equipment operations and maintenance training.

My experience at AWE Europe and a comparison with the US chapter

  • Augmented World Expo is one of the top worldwide XR events. It attracts thousands of visitors and exhibitors from the globe. It is a Tech and Business-oriented event where you can discover new hardware and accessories, meet hardware providers, and XR solution providers for B2B needs.
  • The event is not an ideal place for VR game developers. There are fewer games since they are usually more interested in game-related events, for instance, GDC or Gamescom.
  • AWE US is still the most important place to be compared to the smaller AWE Europe version. Most of the most important XR brands and the biggest XR market is based in the US. This makes it hard to do VR business within the VR community.
  • There are limited opportunities to do business at AWE, given that everyone there knows what is being offered. If you are providing services to other non-VR companies, it is even more challenging to make business connections.
  • AWE Europe is an excellent platform for meeting XR European professionals; however, currently, most of the significant investment in technology is in the US and China.
  • AWE Europe focused on discussing the EU regulations during the event, which are very good and needed for promoting technology that preserves the basic rights of citizens. However, they may hinder innovation and create problems, especially for small startups.
  • The reality of virtual reality (VR) is that it is presently very US-centric, though Europe is searching for its tech identity to promote more technological development. If there is growth in the European XR ecosystem in the coming years, it could potentially level the playing field.
  • Users can discover new and exciting XR hardware in every AWE event and get a glimpse of where the industry is going. From a blogger's perspective, it is a valuable experience.
  • The speaker's experience at AWE EU 2021 was positive and gave the speaker the opportunity to share their knowledge on true mixed reality. The speaker's talk was held in a room filled with interested attendees.
  • Brands exhibiting at AWE Europe are primarily in the XR field, meaning that there is significant potential for discovering possible partners or friends, but not customers. Other events may be better suited for exhibitors seeking to find customers outside of the XR community.

VR Training Cost Analysis and ROI: Worth the Investment?

  • Virtual Reality (VR) training is a new way to learn skills. It uses advanced VR technology like headsets and controllers. This lets learners practice in safe, simulated environments without the risks of real-world training.
  • VR training can reduce training time by up to 75% compared to traditional classroom methods.
  • VR training is more cost-effective at scale, with per-employee implementation costs less than half of classroom training.
  • VR training enhances engagement and knowledge retention, leading to improved training outcomes.
  • Investing in VR training can result in cost savings through reduced accidents, improved decision-making, and minimized mistakes.
  • VR training might cost more upfront than traditional methods. But, it saves a lot in the long run. Traditional training needs a lot of money for travel, equipment, and renting places. VR training lets people learn from anywhere with just an internet connection.
  • VR training offers big savings on ongoing costs. It’s a smart choice for companies looking to save money on training. This way, they can get the most out of their training budget.
  • Training and development need immersion to get the best results. Virtual Reality (VR) training is a game-changer. It outperforms traditional methods in engaging learners and keeping knowledge.
  • By using VR training, companies can improve skills, productivity, and safety. This helps them succeed in a changing business world.
  • VR training is cheaper than old ways of learning, saving companies a lot of money. For example, a big car maker saved $1.5 million a year. They did this by teaching over 10,000 car repair people with VR.
