A year later, the HTC Vive XR Elite is still a uniquely versatile VR headset

  • The HTC Vive XR Elite is a versatile Mixed Reality headset now a year old and still worth considering as it keeps getting better.
  • The Vive XR Elite offers three ways to wear it including a halo strap, earpieces, and mixed reality interface that replaces the magnetically attached cushion with a forehead pad.
  • It is super-lightweight and comfortable which eliminates face pressure and snuggles a fabric cushion against the face.
  • Connecting with PC makes it easy to resize, tilt, and position virtual screens, and objects look a little zoomed in compared to their actual size.
  • The built-in diopter dials allow users to adjust for each eye to maximize sharpness, and 1920-by-1920 pixel-per-eye display resolution works well for PC VR.
  • The Vive XR Elite is not meant to compete directly with the Vision Pro but if you want to option of playing both PC and standalone VR games, this headset can serve both purposes.
  • The VR headset can wirelessly connect to Windows PC via a USB-C port, reducing the gear further, and can work with an external battery if played via 'glasses mode'.
  • At $1,099, it's well-made VR headset that competes well against options like the Meta Quest Pro and is a great alternative to the Quest Pro.
  • The Vive XR Elite may not be meant to compete directly with the Vision Pro, and with the $25 MR Gasket accessory, it matches Quest Pro's floating visor design.
  • However, the Vive XR Elite is almost a year old, and a newer version could come out soon, so waiting until later this year would be a good option.
