New invention transforms any smartphone or TV display into a holographic projector

  • Researchers have created holograms using the light emitted from an ordinary smartphone screen — effectively turning an iPhone into a holographic projector.
  • Using a device called a spatial light modulator (SLM), scientists transformed a 2D image displayed on an iPhone 14 Pro into a 3D hologram.
  • The researchers employed a technique called a 'cascade of holograms,' refining and layering the light waves to build up the 3D image step-by-step.
  • This approach could offer a cost-effective and less complex method for developing holographic displays using widely available devices and potentially be used for augmented and virtual reality interfaces.

AMD Hits Record High Share in x86 Desktops and Servers in Q1 2024

  • AMD has achieved record high unit shares on x86 desktop and x86 server CPU markets in the first quarter of 2024, according to Mercury Research.
  • AMD gained significant server and client revenue share, driven by the growing demand for 4th Gen EPYC and Ryzen 8000 series processors.
  • AMD's market share achieved 23.9% that is the highest desktop CPU market share the company commanded in over a decade.
  • AMD's unit sales of desktop CPUs increased by 4.7% year-over-year in Q1 2024.
  • AMD's unit share on the market of CPUs for notebooks decreased to 19.3% due to the ramp of platforms based on Intel's Core Ultra 'Meteor Lake' powered machines.
  • But the company still demonstrated a significant year-over-year unit share increase of 3.1% and revenue share increase of 4% for mobile PC processors.
  • Intel remained the dominant force in client PC sales with a 79.4% market share, leaving 20.6% for AMD. But AMD gained a 0.3% unit share sequentially and a 3.6% unit share year-over-year.
  • AMD's unit share on the market of CPUs for servers increased to 23.6%, a massive 5% gain year-over-year driven by the ramp of platforms based on AMD's 4th Generation EPYC processors.
  • With a 76.4% unit market share, Intel continues to dominate in servers, but AMD's revenue share of the x86 server market reached 33%, up 5.2% year-over-year and 1.2% from the previous quarter.
  • AMD's rising market share signals that the company is steadily gaining prominence in important markets, supported by the growing adoption of its advanced CPUs.

COLD VR Demo review: a promising adrenaline action game

  • COLD VR is a VR game that is a bit like Superhot VR, with gameplay that has you killing enemies that are attacking you, and both you and the enemies die on contact.
  • The game has a time warping mechanic that makes time go slowly as you move and go at normal speed when you are still.
  • The game presents levels that require calibration and a high degree of movement which can be a frustrating experience on occasion.
  • COLD VR has several weapons including guns, swords, and some platforms that propel you in the air. The game has a cyberpunk look and feel with vibrant colours and wireframe neon props.
  • The controls in the game are similar to many other action VR games, and the game requires continuous movement with some teleportations.
  • COLD VR gives you some sense of presence, but it is not the best out there.
  • The game is not the most comfortable game out there as it features continuous locomotion and jump platforms.
  • COLD VR is a promising game with the potential to be a hit on its full release. The game is available as a free demo on Steam.

Quest 3 Has Higher Effective Resolution, So Why Does Everyone Think Vision Pro Looks Best?

  • Despite having fewer pixels per-eye than Quest 3, the Vision Pro has a lower effective resolution bottlenecked by its lenses.
  • Karl Guttag, the XR display expert has compared the two headset's display + lens pipelines and had found the Quest 3 has greater resolving power than Vision Pro.
  • Vision Pro, with an 11.7MP (3,660 × 3,200) per-eye resolution, has 2.6x the pixels of Quest 3 with per-eye resolution of 4.5 MP (2,064 × 2,208).
  • Vision Pro appears to have a sharper display due to matching the interface with the headset's resolving power.
  • Apple matches every piece of the underlying interface to the headset's resolving power which means that graphics are taking full advantage of the number of pixels available to render them.
  • Apple is able to achieve much of this extra fidelity thanks to the headset’s M2 processor and the use of dynamic foveated rendering.
  • The interface on Quest 3 is rendered largely with raster graphics, rather than vector which means they only have optimal sharpness at one specific distance and angle.
  • Factors like color saturation, contrast levels, brightness, and frame rate affect an image's overall quality.
  • With an OLED HDR display, Vision Pro is capable of showing richer colors with a higher peak brightness.
  • Despite having lower resolving power, Vision Pro excels due to Apple's optimization matching the headset's resolution.

NewImages Festival Showed Me What VR Experiences Can Offer Beyond Games

  • NewImages Festival showcased a wide range of VR projects from various parts of the world that tackled difficult subjects beyond gaming.
  • VR filmmakers are using the immersive medium to address challenging real-life topics like civil rights struggle, parental separation during the Holocaust, and Cambodian genocide.
  • The festival featured the only VR game - Yuki, bullet hell roguelike - which also showcased its mixed reality update.
  • The XR Library provided a host of VR experiences accessible on standalone Quest headsets as well as a few PC VR-focused experiences.
  • The author recommends two particular titles - The Eye and I, a surrealist approach with a civil liberty concern; and Missing 10 Hours, an impactful journey to address abuse by encouraging action.
  • In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats was the author's favourite experience, which used haptic vest to explore the UK's acid-house movement in '80s Coventry.
  • The author found issues in experiencing 'Tonight with the Impressionists' using a Vive Focus 3 in a room with roughly 80 people where a slight delay on headset tracking and the navigation became tedious, hampering the immersive experience.
  • Despite VR experiences being less popular than gaming, the author saw an impressive set of more cinematic experiences and hopes the medium continues to grow.
  • The festival took place from April 24 until April 28, 2024, and brought together VR and AR projects from around the world.

WebXR Game Of The Year Targets Apple Vision Pro's Gaze-And-Pinch Input System

  • The Escape Artist, a WebXR game from Paradowski Creative with support for Quest 3 controller tracking with button input for interaction and teleportation, is exploring how eye-and hand-tracking on Vision Pro may enhance gameplay senses.
  • It looks at issues regarding design, tech and privacy, and aims to create a simple teleport mechanic with less movement that utilizes this input's gaze vector, eye-tracking and subtle hand movement to increase player interaction.
  • The blog recently published a three.JS example which provides a gaze vector on SelectStart, this eye-line data is exposed for a single frame, thus preventing abuse by developers.
  • Apple sees this highly personal data as something that should be protected at a system level and treated with extreme care by developers.
  • On Vision Pro, full “hand tracking” is only used to report joint location data for rendering and doesn't require any special browser permissions.
  • Eye tracking and subtle hand gestures can be combined to create a less frustrating and more intuitive teleportation mechanic for users.
  • The input's gaze vector, eye-tracking, and subtle hand movement can make it highly useful if it's given full camera access, and developers would be wise to experiment with it as soon as possible.
  • Developers may also have to address object selection, applying a noise filter to the hand motion on the teleport reticule, setting a rotation delta of the wrist Z-axis to drive teleport rotation, and determining a more intuitive cancel gesture.
  • Paradowski Creative is currently developing this feature for its game, and the second phase of incorporating these features is tentatively scheduled for early June.
  • Gaze-based input feels like a computer is reading your mind in real-time to give you what you want.
