How Songbird Aims For Approachable VR Karaoke On Quest

  • Songbird, developed by Always Blue Games, swaps USB microphones for the Quest’s integrated microphone for VR karaoke gaming and offers 33 songs at launch. The game allows for no-fail sing-along, with every song unlocked from the start. Marcus Henderson, founder and the creative director of Songbird, has been interested in VR since childhood and believes we are only scratching the surface of what’s to come for VR gaming.
  • The game is designed to be accessible to a wide audience and to provide a fun experience rather than generate sales. Henderson believes music games are often used for therapy or to serve as competitive cudgels that test skills against others. He sees VR gaming as having vast potential as it can enable people to ‘feel’ what they would not otherwise experience.
  • Henderson says Songbird’s design choices make for a forgiving gameplay experience that is a little looser and aligned with the team’s goal of keeping the game accessible and easy to play. The intention is to offer an experience beyond staring at a lyrics board. The team aims to convey a welcoming environment through the use of bright, warm colours and a world filled with critters as your audience.
  • Multiplayer options are in the future plans of the game if they can find the intended audience, and monthly song packs and expanding artist packs are on the horizon of future updates to provide new in-game experiences. The team is interested in building a community as they continue to make quality of life improvements.
  • Songbird is currently priced at $24.99 and is available on the Meta Quest platform. The development team at Always Blue Games has a background in music and believes VR games are only scratching the surface of what’s to come. They are committed to pushing the boundaries of VR gaming, creating new experiences and revising old mechanics to unlock new potential areas for gaming innovation.

Designing for Safety in Immersive Experiences (XR)

  • VR comes with its own set of safety challenges, including motion sickness and physical injuries.
  • To design safe immersive experiences, it is important to start with seated experiences for beginners and gradually progress to standing or moving experiences.
  • Clear boundaries should be set using visual or haptic cues to define the user's safe zone.
  • Ergonomics should be prioritized by placing interactive objects at eye level and close to the body.

‘Alien: Rogue Incursion’ Review – A Thrilling but Repetitive Fight Through Xenomorph Hordes

  • Alien: Rogue Incursion is the first full-blown VR-native in the storied franchise, serving up hordes of Xenomorphs in an authentically ‘Aliens’ universe.
  • Essentially, Rogue Incursion builds pressure by making aliens super powerful and super easy to kill, but also super prevalent.
  • The lack of variety in enemy types and repetitive encounters do spoil the fun somewhat.
  • The game’s only two consumables are pretty scarce, which increases pressure to get every shot right—all the while tackling the game’s routine assortment of environmental puzzles.
  • The lack of automatic saves comes in stark contrast to the game’s sprawling levels, which offer plenty of opportunities to get extra equipment and learn more about the world through found notes.
  • For all of my frustrations with Rogue Incursion, it absolutely smashes the Alien franchise aesthetic out of the park, creating a foreboding atmosphere across its massive levels.
  • Inventory and interaction systems can feel just a little too cumbersome to be truly friction-free though.
  • With only few exceptions, Alien: Rogue Incursion is a very comfortable game.
  • It also features all standard comfort options (excluding teleportation), including smooth and variable snap-turn, variable strength movement vignettes, and both standing and two seating options (fixed and swivel).
  • Overall, Alien: Rogue Incursion is a thrilling but repetitive fight through Xenomorph hordes, offering a balance of combat and exploration through its dark and gritty cinematic universe.

Microsoft XR and Windows Mixed Reality: Could the HoloLens Make a Comeback?

  • Microsoft introduced Windows Mixed Reality platform in 2017 and failed to gain popularity in consumer market.
  • Microsoft has cancelled the HoloLens and ended support for Windows Mixed Reality, indicating stepping away from XR space.
  • Microsoft has been focusing on becoming a software provider for other XR vendors and partnering with Meta and RealWear for XR solutions.
  • Microsoft Mesh, an innovative platform for immersive collaboration, continues to evolve and is not going anywhere.
  • HoloLens 2 headsets will be discontinued, but Microsoft will continue to provide HoloLens technology to the US army.
  • Rumors suggest Microsoft could be working on a new line of MR headsets, creating a new “spatial computing” device focused on enterprise landscape.
  • If Microsoft creates an entirely new line of XR headsets, it will be pretty premium in quality, similar to the Apple Vision Pro.
  • Mass production won’t start until 2026 as Samsung has been asked to produce hundreds of thousands of mini OLED panels that could potentially power a new line of MR headsets.
  • Microsoft seems to be more interested in the XR future from a software perspective, collaborating with XR vendors for software solutions.
  • While the future for Microsoft’s XR journey is uncertain, the company is expected to continue to focus on the enterprise market for XR solutions.

Devs Worked Overtime To Ship Skydance's BEHEMOTH

  • Skydance’s BEHEMOTH game was released on Quest 2, 3 and 3S, PlayStation VR2 and Steam with a day-one goal of releasing across five platforms and a narrative which saw players defeating three giants.
  • Skydance also delivered a patch for PlayStation VR2, a week-of-release patch for Quest headsets, and a patch for PC as well.
  • When I saw the game in mid-November with missing textures and placeholder animations, Kittelsen says..., essentially deactivating the full build of the game brought to show at the release party.
  • The glitches came despite production efforts including deliberate store delay and delays to provide essential certification and quality assurance checks.
  • Skydance made a major investment in this title, but it is also an extraordinarily difficult year for VR developers.
  • Survios delayed its Quest 3 release of Alien: Rogue Incursion to focus on PS VR2 and PC VR release in 2024.
  • Kittlesen advised other developers that releasing across fewer platforms was better, given the enormous expense and the realisation that virtual reality is still an experimental and nascent medium.
  • When asked by journalists about whether comments about difficult game development such as those coming from CD Projekt Red were conducted within the ambit of such concerns for development deadlines, Kittlesen emphasised that Skydance focused on avoiding mandatory crunch and was accommodating to the needs of its staff.
  • Skydance’s SVP Creative noted that there had been overtime at the company but said that it was not mandatory.
  • Skydance gave its staff a break through the end of the year and some extra comp time to thank them for the overtime put in.
