Amazon announces general availability of Amazon EBS Provisioned Rate for Volume Initialization, speeding up data transfer from EBS snapshots to new volumes.
The feature allows creation of fully performant EBS volumes predictably and accelerates initialization of multiple volumes and instances.
It expedites volume initialization by fetching data from EBS snapshots at a specified rate, ranging between 100 MiB/s and 300 MiB/s.
Users can specify volume initialization rates to ensure operational efficiency and visibility on completion times.
Volume initialization rate can be set when launching an EC2 instance or creating a volume from a snapshot in the AWS CLI or console.
Once volumes are created, EBS tracks the hydration progress and notifies users upon completion.
The new feature is supported for all EBS volume types and charges are based on snapshot size and specified initialization rate.
Users are encouraged to try the feature in the Amazon EC2 console and provide feedback via AWS re:Post or AWS Support contacts.
